Godzilla was created as a coping mechanism for the atrocities of the bombs. And this is probably the first blockbuster that doesn’t hide it in nuance. They literally speak on Hiroshima IN THE DIALOGUE. But they also have an entire storyline as to how the Japanese used humans as weapons and the affects on the mentality of young pilots during this time. It also shows the extent people will go to for revenge and, ultimately, victory and it does not shy away from showing how nasty humans can be when drowned in hate. I think people are just shocked as to how un-American this movie is, which is more telling about the people watching it more than anything.
