A new an improved version of my paper "Sequential pricing of electricity" is now available in Energy Economics: authors.elsevier.com/a/1jWsD… . It discusses how design and analysis of price formation in electricity markets needs to change given uncertainty and growth in storage.

Some Californian plugged his Tesla into an unattended electric outlet in rural Montana, an above-the-fold news event in the local weekly, but settled up with the local electric co-op before skedaddling. Hilarious, charming story all around. montanafreepress.org/2023/07…

This is an interesting one: putting batteries into railcars so that you could use them as stationary storage or drive them around as a form of electricity transmission. While it would be a bet against large-scale new transmission, that isn't a terrible bet to take.
.@phadkeamol and team explore the potential role that rail-based mobile energy storage could play in providing back-up to the US electricity grid. go.nature.com/3XQTNJi

Today, there are ox bow lakes in the sky. A river is driven by gravity. The polar jet stream is driven by the temperature difference between the Arctic and lower latitudes. That difference is getting smaller. And like a river, the jet stream meanders. [1/5] @cambecc

Gentlepeople: the headwaters of the mighty Columbia River. This is like a civilizationally important site, accessible via a gravel parking lot with a porta potty. Extra resonant this week: protect wetlands.

Quick Update Followers - As I discussed a few days ago, the pattern for the West Coast is really going to do a 180, and flip cold and somewhat active. Check out the models below for the beginning and middle of the May. I know some folks are not going to like this, but as I discussed the other day, there might be some rain in the forecast and snow. Unreal, after the major warmup/snow melt later this week. Crazy stuff is brewing. Another foot in the Sierra Nevada's over 7000 feet?? Winter is not over! Stay tuned for more updates later tonight, as the pattern shift evolves.

Two things can be true: 1) This is a monumental technical milestone that should be lauded as such. 2) It is nowhere near bringing us "limitless clean energy", and likely isn't the pathway that will get us there in the future either. cnn.com/2022/12/12/politics/…

If we were to do an #energytwitter Battle Royale of the top energy stories of the year...what stories would make the cut? Ukraine/gas prices, Inflation Reduction Act, COP27, MISO transmission, IIJA, Auxin solar tariffs, train strikes, what else?

Since we're talking about the need for electricians to electrifying everything, we're ALSO gonna need a bigger grid. Here's why we need to more than double the recent pace of transmission expansion and shift into a high gear we haven't seen since the 1970s-90s. ⤵️
NEW REPEATProject.org analysis out on the importance of electricity transmission expansion to unlock the full emissions reduction potential (& health benefits) of the #InflationReductionAct: repeatproject.org/docs/REPEA… Read on to learn why 100s of millions of tons are at stake.

Really great discussion of transmission in the West with Maury Galbraith, Scott Bolton, and Neil Millar. I should say we also need to avoid "manels," and a late change reduced our diversity. But the content is really helpful. youtube.com/watch?v=uAhHykAa…
