Just another day in @EunissesH’s district in Los Angeles. Encampment growing in neighborhood despite months of residents outreach. @MayorOfLA @KTLA

Hi @nithyavraman, hoping this area of Pico Union at Bonnie Brae and 11th can get more attention from your administration. Over the years we’ve had cars set on fire and explode in the middle of the night near persistent encampments and garbage. No change despite our advocacy.

Latest car explosion was last night! Most of my neighbors have lived here decades, speak little English and just want street lights and safety. @nithyavraman

Global model ensembles are in strong agreement that a prolonged &anomalous nearly West-wide autumn heatwave will develop this week & persist for 10+ days. While some daytime records may be set, this event will be more notable for its persistence & breadth. [Thread]

Unfortunately any time there is a performative raid on MacArthur Park, this is what the surrounding neighborhoods look like afterward. @MayorOfLA @NathanHochmanDA @EunissesH

California is importing refined products from abroad just as the Iran war tightens global crude oil supplies. Fuel made from Russian oil is surging into the state, even though such sales are used to finance that nation’s ongoing war with Ukraine. capitalandmain.com/as-prices…

With global oil supplies likely to stay tight, most California drivers are in for a painful year. Two in-state refineries have closed, wiping out 20% of refining capacity. Before the Iran War @CalEnergy said it could depend on gasoline imports from abroad to make up the shortfall. Those shipments mainly came from Asian refineries that are highly exposed to the Strait of Hormuz disruptions. We'll still be able to get gasoline imported. But it will be expensive. And that will have major political impacts.
When a heat wave hit the West and the price of a gasoline gallon rose, California faced the pain of dependence on climate-warming oil priced by global markets. As refineries close, it is getting a lifeline from a surprising source: Fuel imports made from Russian oil. 🧵

Refined fuels made from Russian oil could continue flowing to CA “as long as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed," funding its Ukraine war. CA depends on foreign gasoline bc no U.S. pipelines bring fuel here. But the crude sources of these imports have received no scrutiny.

This was foreseeable. In 2000, when gasoline prices hit a record, @CalEnergy recommended several steps it could have taken to lessen dependence on foreign oil sources. The state didn't act. Full story here: capitalandmain.com/as-prices…
