Great being in Deerborn with @abbasformi
Jake Lang’s hateful actions are an attack on our democracy. He’s emboldened by a president who pardoned him for Jan 6th and a U.S. Senate candidate in Mike Rogers who’s actively championing a politics of hate and division.
We’re standing up for a politics of love and solidarity.
My campaign office was vandalized this morning. Like families across Southeast Michigan today, I have my head down working to realize the vision of America that includes all of us — even those who are needlessly threatened by the beauty and value of our diversity.
I remain undeterred in advancing leadership that strengthens our democracy rather than undermining it.
Thank you, Senate District 2. I'm honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Michigan State Senate. Our victory was made possible by every volunteer, fellow, staff member, family, friend, and neighbor who joined in what has become a movement for a politics of taking care of each other by putting working families first.
I thank Representative Erin Byrnes for her longstanding leadership and service and for running a campaign that advanced issues we both deeply care about. I look forward to uniting with her and those who supported her campaign to serve the common good together and win this seat in November.
Whether you live in Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Melvindale, Allen Park, Taylor, or any Detroit, I am committed to building a State Senate office that works for you. Together, we will fight to make life more affordable by lowering costs and championing universal healthcare, childcare, and elder care. And we will care for our environment and each other. That means protecting our air and water, strengthening our schools, defending our democracy, and delivering safety in our neighborhoods and on our roads.
On to November 💙✊
Statement from Team Abbas
Team Abbas extends our congratulations to District 2 communities as Abbas Alawieh will be our Democratic Nominee for the Michigan State Senate.
This morning, we are also extending our condolences to Abbas’s family. Last night, as we awaited the results, we learned of the passing of Hajj Kassem Bazzi, Abbas’s maternal grandfather and a beloved Dearborn community elder. May he rest in peace. Please keep Abbas’s family in your prayers as they take needed time together.
Abbas will share his own thoughts on the race soon. For now, thank you to every community that made this win possible: Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Allen Park, Melvindale, Taylor, and Detroit. This win is yours.

This is interesting: Kamala Harris met with Abbas Alawieh, who led the Uncommitted Movement’s protests during the Democratic National Convention in 2024.

ALT In 2024, the uncommitted Democratic delegates said the Harris campaign denied their request for a Palestinian American to speak at the Democratic National Convention. Ultimately, many of the activists felt politically homeless and split on whether to endorse Harris. Last week in Detroit, Harris met with a co-founder of the Uncommitted Movement, Abbas Alawieh, who's now running as a Democrat for a Michigan state Senate seat. He has said he voted for Harris in 2024. Harris also talked recently with James Zogby, a longtime member of the Democratic National Committee who has advocated for Palestinian rights, according to sources familiar with their conversation.
Scoop: Kamala Harris privately called New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani last week and has been holding lengthy, closed-door meetings with other prominent progressives — including pro-Palestinian activists.

State Senate candidate Abbas Alawieh of Dearborn, a leader with the Uncommitted movement in 2024, said today he met last week in Detroit with Kamala Harris. In a call with Harris before the meeting, Alawieh said he told Harris about how Israeli attacks in Lebanon are affecting many in his district, including his own family. "When I met with her last week, I reiterated what has long been my position: American tax dollars must never be used to target civilians and destroy entire communities," he said in statement.
I’m proud to be fighting every day on behalf of Senate District 2 families. As State Senator, I’ll always speak up to ensure the concerns of our communities are heard.
Recently, I met with Vice President Kamala Harris in Detroit. The meeting came after months of conversations she initiated over multiple phone calls.
In my first call with VP Harris, I shared with her that several community members in the Michigan State Senate district I’m running to represent have had family recently killed in Israeli airstrikes with support from our American government, and that my 91-year-old grandmother’s home was destroyed as well. When I met with her last week, I reiterated what has long been my position: American tax dollars must never be used to target civilians and destroy entire communities.
Every Democrat knows how important Michigan is to defeating Trumpism. As a Michigan Democratic candidate for State Senate District 2, I urge VP Harris and all of our party’s leaders to side with peace-loving Americans against endless wars, in opposition to the Israeli military’s genocide in Gaza, and against the ethnic cleansing campaign in Lebanon. My focus continues to be on the grassroots movement we’re building to fight for pro-working class, pro-peace values in Lansing and in Washington.

This Nakba Remembrance Day, remember that the Nakba didn’t end. It continues through the genocide in Gaza, the annexation of Southern Lebanon, and the obliteration of the West Bank. And instead of buying healthcare, schools, or infrastructure here, our tax dollars are funding it.
Thank you @AbdulElSayed 💙✊
It shouldn’t matter what your name is, how you pray, or where your family came from. All of us deserve the right to participate in our democracy without threat of violence or intimidation. Abbas is a community leader and an inspiring, aspiring public servant. When people try to shut voices like his down, they only make them stronger. I’m glad that he, his team, and his volunteers are safe. And I stand with him for a democracy big enough for all of us.
