I see zero reason to measure an individual engineer's "impact" or "effectiveness." Individual performance appraisal leads nowhere good. What it does lead to is competition instead of collaboration, hoarding expertise (to get a bigger part of the bonus pool), scapegoating, good people quitting, and a host of other problems. If an individual on the team needs help, it's the team's responsibility to provide it. If they're not a good fit for the team, it's the organization's responsibility to find a better fit. No measurement is required—it's usually painfully obvious when somebody needs mentoring or other help. The competition inherent in measuring _individual_ "effectiveness" prevents that correction from happening, in fact.

Saying software is dead because everyone can create it with agents is like saying movies are dead because billions of ppl have a high res video camera in their pockets Movies doing better than ever+more ppl make a living from videos, movies, TV than ever (Analogy from @simonw)
Saying software is dead because anyone can build it is like saying photography is dead now that everyone in the world has a camera in their pocket Not only is it not dead it's the beginning of the Kodak Brownie moment for software, and we will see an absolute explosion of it It will be the first generation for who building software will feel no different than using it. This is crazy! The quality and bar of what we expect from our everyday apps will be raised dramatically, we'll have personal software, we'll have disposable software, and agents will be the foundation for most of it Tech has always been chaotic and evolving, the people who have been able to adapt and move in front of new opportunities have always excelled, this is nothing new, I'm seeing it now and we'll see it 10 years from now Find the opportunities in the chaose and disruption, there are countless of them

These are clean-room open-source Rust reimplementations of Adobe workflows, not reverse-engineered. Most apps are labeled "in development" or "early alpha." getartcraft.com/apps github.com/storytold/phot… github.com/storytold/vect… gigazine.net/news/20261005-…

device_preview 3.0 is in prerelease 🎉 Rebuilt on a custom WidgetsBinding — device simulation now happens below the widget tree, not around it. And it lives in Flutter DevTools now. Try it and tell me what breaks — I'd love your feedback! aloisdeniel.github.io/flutte…

The biggest lie in software engineering is that it changes fast. I've watched it stay the same for 30 years. - We still use languages and algorithms from decades ago. - We still haven't adopted practices we knew were good in the 90s. - We still use ideas from the 80s to build AI. "Everything changes every six months" isn't harmless. It pushes engineers to chase frameworks instead of fundamentals. It makes teams rewrite instead of refactor. It undermines the claim that what we do is engineering at all. Real engineering compounds. It builds on what came before. What's actually changed in 30 years, and what have we just rebranded?
