NEW: Netanyahu pushed for attack on Iran ahead of Israeli election. Israel’s military chief resisted the prime minister, who then pressed in recent days for a separate action, short of an overt strike.

UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed secretly warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in September 2023 that Hamas was planning a major attack, according to people who spoke to @nytimes.
- The warning reportedly did not reach Israel’s senior security leadership. Minutes from a meeting on Oct. 1, reviewed by the Times, show Netanyahu instead urged officials to maintain calm in Gaza and opposed considering strikes against senior Hamas leaders.
- During the meeting, Netanyahu stated that any Israeli military action in Gaza could jeopardize the chance of Saudi Arabia normalizing diplomatic ties with Israel - an agreement he believed was close to being finalized.
- Netanyahu has denied receiving such a warning, saying any intelligence from the UAE would have been transferred through official intelligence channels.
- Five former senior Israeli officials said that the call and warning were not mentioned in internal investigations into the security failures surrounding the Oct. 7 attack. Sheikh Mohammed later reportedly discussed the call with then-CIA Director William Burns, saying he had warned Netanyahu of a looming Hamas threat in Gaza or the West Bank. When Israel launched its latest war against Hezbollah in March, the first targets the military warned it would strike were not weapons depots or underground command centers.
They were banks.
Israeli fighter jets leveled more than a dozen branches of a shadowy financial institution known as Al-Qard al-Hassan, long accused of operating as Hezbollah’s bank in Lebanon. More airstrikes followed on exchange shops that Iran used to funnel money to Hezbollah, its Lebanese proxy, and on gas stations that generated revenue for the group.
With these strikes, Israel was sending a clear message: Hezbollah’s money, not only its arsenal, was in the cross hairs.
The bombings capped the most aggressive campaign yet by Israel, the Trump administration and Lebanon’s own government to squeeze Hezbollah financially by disrupting the group’s funding channels, particularly from Iran.
