The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was the most peaceful and human empire in the history of mankind.
No colonies. No transatlantic slave trade. No Inquisition. While Spain burned people alive and Britain shipped Africans across the ocean, the Commonwealth gave religious freedom to Jews, Protestants, and Orthodox Christians when the rest of Europe was drowning in blood.
The Warsaw Confederation of fifteen seventy-three was the first law in European history guaranteeing freedom of conscience.
It elected its kings. It had the largest parliament on the continent.
It was the first to abolish capital punishment for witchcraft in sixteen forty-eight — a century before most of Europe.
And unlike every other empire, it never fought a war of aggression. No invasions for conquest. Every conflict it entered was defensive.
It also developed Ukraine and Belarus economically — turned the wild steppe into farmland, built cities, trade routes, and institutions where before there was nothing but frontier.
It wasn't perfect. Nothing human is. But compared to every empire that came before or after, it was the closest thing mankind has ever built to a civilization that chose tolerance over terror.

This is our three minute video on why the Baltics matter. Expertly rejigged by my brilliant colleague at @securebaltics
🎬 When it comes to security, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania see things we don’t see. They understand things we don’t understand. And they do things we don’t do.
🌍 Europe doesn’t have a Baltic problem. It has Baltic solutions. #BeMoreBaltic

Meloni: I do not miss the Russian tanks in Prague and Budapest. I do not miss the Berlin Wall.
If Ukraine stopped defending itself tomorrow, Russia would occupy a European nation and Soviet-style imperialism would return.
Surrender is not peace. It is conquest. 1/

Europe faces waves of airspace violations and sabotage, but also a relentless stream of Russian disinformation.
That is why the EU today sanctioned Xenia Fedorova.
We're defending our information space against fabricated lies and deliberate manipulation. This is deterrence, not censorship.
The EU will continue to counter Russia's destabilising activities.

🇱🇹 👑 Today, let's explore the history and visual evolution of another cornerstone symbol of Lithuanian statehood - the Columns of Gediminas.
On January 5, 2018, Lithuania Post issued a four-stamp series titled “Symbols of the Lithuanian State: the Columns of Gediminas”.
It was the very first stamp issue released in the special year of 2018, marking the centenary of the restoration of the Lithuanian state. As the Columns of Gediminas are among the oldest and most important symbols of Lithuanian statehood, this series was chosen to launch the year's commemorative stamp releases.
Although all four stamps feature the same basic symbol, artist Aušrelė Ratkevičienė brilliantly illustrates its evolution, from the emblem of a ruling dynasty to a symbol of freedom embraced by an entire nation.

When Notre-Dame burned in 2019, the world stopped.
Today, Russia damages Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a monastery nearly 1,000 years old and older than Notre-Dame itself.
A thousand years of history deserves the same attention, the same sympathy, and the same protection.

Godfather of AI: "If you sleep well tonight, you may not have understood this lecture."
This 47-minute lecture is the best thing I saw about AI in the last few months.
It will definitely help you understand how it actually works and where it's going.
Geoffrey Hinton built the neural networks behind every AI alive, then quit Google to warn the world about it.
The part nobody wanted to hear:
> AI is already developing abilities its creators didn't intend
> in most cognitive tasks it's already ahead of us
> the question is no longer if it surpasses us but when
> the only decision left is which side of that line you're on
Right now the average person opens Claude, types something, gets an answer, closes the tab.
They think they're using AI. they're using maybe 10% of it.
I went through his entire lecture, then mapped everything he described to what Claude can actually do today.
17 Claude features most people will never find on their own.

June 3, 1988. The Lithuanian Reform Movement Sąjūdis is founded in Vilnius. In just two years, it would help lead Lithuania from Soviet occupation to the restoration of independence. Through mass rallies, civic activism, and the courage of ordinary people, Sąjūdis became one of the most successful freedom movements in modern European history.
