Love spontaneous urban ecosystems on post-industrial slag-dominated sites? we do too (@lglyndal+laura merwin+me) - you can read our #openaccess opinion piece published in @SERestoration about why these sites should be considered ecologically valuable. bit.ly/3sN5zXk

*Extirpated species alert!* Led by botanist Nathanael Pilla, we found a plant species on the Southeast Side of Chicago last cataloged in the 1800s! The Calumet slag barrens are amazing sites of diversity. Check it out (link in reply): The Rediscovery of Eleocharis geniculata

one of my favorite spots on campus
Before Autumn Quarter begins, enjoy a moment of peace at the Divinity School's cloister garden, located between Swift Hall and Bond Chapel. 🕊️⛲

Facing stress and struggles? A reminder that plant carnivory evolved independently at least a dozen times in response to environmental challenges. Difficult problems can lead to innovation and great beauty. Be the sundew.

Did you know that NYBG's Steere Herbarium has one of the best collections of #algae in the world? In fact, our 130,896 specimens of algae include more than 10,000 species, and weigh as much as 1.5 bull African Elephants! #NYBGscience

it has been a very strange (not) winter in the Great Lakes/upper midwest
There are no more new words I can use to describe the current state of the climate crisis. The world is seeing abrupt change unlike anything it has seen in 66,000,000 years. Mass ecosystem die-offs, missing winters, sky-high sea surface temperatures are all becoming the norm.

long live #thismiaamericana. these buddies are hard to find! "Out of the approximately 100 described Thismia species, at least 55 are known only from their original discovery locations, and at least 38 have been documented based on a single discovery instance."
In a surprising turn of events, @tugutuguk and his colleagues made an amazing discovery. Please meet #Relictithismia kimotsukiensis, a new genus of #Thismiaceae from #Japan. doi.org/10.1007/s10265-024-0…
