On a full-moon night at Jetavanaramaya, Anuradhapura.
1,700 years ago this solid brick mountain rose 122 metres — the tallest stupa in the world and the third-tallest structure on Earth, after only the Great Pyramids of Giza. Built with 93 million bricks under King Mahasena, it is still the largest brick structure by volume ever constructed.
Tonight the same stone pavement carries monks and devotees under the ancient dome, exactly as it has for centuries.
