5 things to put on your one-page operating plan: 1. A "not doing" list (from @bhalligan's MSPOT at HubSpot) Write 2-4 things you won't fund this quarter. If nothing gets cut, nothing is really a priority. 2. A pre-mortem row (from @Benioff's V2MOM) List 2-4 risks for each quarterly priority before you start. V2MOM is the framework that asks for obstacles up front. 3. Color-coded scorecards (from EOS) Put 5-8 metrics on the plan. Mark them red, yellow, or green before each weekly meeting. Talk about the reds and yellows. Leave the greens alone. 4. One owner per priority (from OKRs + EOS) Put one name next to every quarterly priority. If you can't pick a name, the priority isn't clear enough. 5. A blank-page quarterly reset (from @agilescaleup's Scaling Up) Don't edit last quarter's plan. Start from a blank page every quarter. Editing gives you tweaks. Rewriting forces a real choice: recommit or drop it. AvidXchange did this every quarter for 16 straight years before its IPO.

I can't escape the idea that the secret to success at a commercial software company is the willingness of your executive team to engage, every day, on the #1 priority. Such that - in essence - it crowds all the other priorities out of everyone's calendar. I see a lot of teams that find this distasteful, that somehow this is micro-management. They harbor the (delusional) idea they can occasionally talk about a topic, among many, and the teams will internalize the priority, and take action. I hear a lot 'oh I told everyone that last quarter.' In today's WFH world, the vacuum is filled with THE DAILY CALENDAR. 30 minute slots that blot out everything. And then - equally - these same execs will wonder why nothing is moving very fast. Things aren't getting accomplished. Or worse, the team is working on stuff that doesn't seem all that valuable, in hindsight. I don't think I've ever seen this more clearly articulated than in the book Mastering the Rockefeller Habits. It's an old book at this point (2002?), but it's more relevant than ever. I haven't picked it up in 10 years, but now I feel like I need to go read it again. I looked at the checklist and thought, damn, that's it. That's exactly it. @agilescaleup amazon.com/Mastering-Rockefe…

Grateful moment. 22 years ago, Verne Harnish gave me my first real shot on stage. He saw something in me before there was any proof and that single act changed the trajectory of my career. Getting to reconnect with Verne and Bob Verdun reminds me how much this work is built on belief, trust, and people willing to take a chance on you early. Feels like we’re laying the groundwork for something meaningful together in 2026. More to come. #Gratitude #Leadership #Speaking #Mentorship #LongGame #OutThinker #kaihan

Give First: The Power of Mentorship is officially out (today is the release date). In honor of the release, I decided to write feld.com/archives/2025/06/gi… to explain why I view Give First as a philosophy instead of a religion. For all that have embraced this philosophy, contributed to it, and helped me hone and evolve it over the years, thank you.
