Jim Hutton revealed in 1996 that the “relationship” he and Freddie shared had largely been a masquerade. He also admitted to physically assaulting Freddie and even breaking his bones just 12 hours before Freddie died. No one needs to “hate” Hutton, but it’s important to acknowledge that their relationship was not what Hutton originally portrayed it to be. He explained that the sexual relationship they had, which he knew had never been exclusive, had already run its course by the time Freddie became sick. He said he had convinced himself he was someone important in Freddie’s life, when in reality he was no different from anyone else around Freddie. He believed that if Freddie had stayed healthy and continued his energetic lifestyle, he probably would have been “paid something and sent off.” Even the phrase “my man,” which Freddie sometimes used, Hutton said Freddie meant in a playful, camp way — often teasing him. It caused arguments, especially when Freddie joked around with Peter Straker, sometimes at Hutton’s expense. Hutton admitted his own faults, calling himself a “spoilt eejit.” He said they were like Freddie’s “court jesters,” and he grew resentful because deep down he had realized the relationship was partly an act on Freddie’s side. When someone referred to their relationship as a “masquerade,” Hutton didn’t even know the word — he looked it up in a dictionary and was hurt, though he later accepted it was probably true. He emphasized that everyone at Garden Lodge — Phoebe the personal assistant, Joe the cook, himself as gardener and handyman and fish-keeper, and Terry the driver — were all equally important to Freddie. He was not more special than any of them. In the end, he said, he was even on Freddie’s payroll: “A hired hand.” Hutton openly admitted he exaggerated his importance.
