A Boy, His Mother, A Loaf of Bread & The Great Importance of Charity! “One day, Ibn al-Furāt summoned one of the scribes and said to him: ‘Woe to you! I have harboured ill intentions towards you, and I have repeatedly wished to have you arrested and your wealth confiscated. Yet, whenever I see you in a dream, you prevent me from doing so with a loaf of bread. Indeed, I saw you in a dream several nights ago. I was intent on arresting you, but you kept resisting me. So I ordered my soldiers to attack you. Yet, whenever they struck at you with arrows or anything else, you would shield yourself from their blows with a loaf of bread in your hand, and nothing could reach you. Tell me, then, what is the story behind this loaf of bread?’ The man replied: ‘O Minister, ever since I was a young child, my mother would place a loaf of bread beneath my pillow every night. When morning came, she would give it in charity on my behalf. She continued this practice without fail until she passed away. When she died, I continued the practice myself. Every night, I place a loaf of bread beneath my pillow, and when morning comes, I give it in charity.’ The minister was astonished by this and said: ‘By Allah, no harm shall ever befall you from me after this day! My intentions towards you have now become good, and I have grown to love you.’” Ibn Kathīr, Al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah, 11/224.

Shaykh ‘Ādil b. Īsā ar-Ruhaylī حفظه الله on the Works of Ibn Qayyim and their Importance in the lives of the believer! Shaykh ‘Ādil is from the mashayikh of Madinah, known to the mashayikh and an excellent teacher and murabbi. May Allah preserve him. In times like these, we are in need more than ever to return back to the mashayikh. And he is of the most nurturing of teachers around. I shared the video and informed the Shaykh I would be translating & sharing more of his works. He thanked and encouraged: “Strive hard, so that Allah may bring about benefit through it.”

I’ve been thinking this morning, prompted by some thought-provoking posts and articles from @DaarusSunnah and our brother Hishaam @aitchmk__, about how much we need to look at ourselves and put our own affairs right. How often do we read a reminder and immediately think of someone else who needs it, without first asking what needs to change in us? Allah tells us now what people will say when the reality of the Hereafter becomes clear, including those painful words: “Oh, I wish I had sent ahead (some good) for my life.” Surah al Fajr That word “life” really makes us pause. Imam al Sa‘di (d. 1376 AH) رحمه الله explains in his tafsir that it means the permanent, everlasting life. The dunya is a life we pass through, while the life ahead is the one we should be preparing for. We are being told about that regret while we still have time to do something about it. There are times when we need to address what others are doing, but our own hearts, prayers, character and responsibilities deserve most of our attention. Our families have rights over us, there are faults we need to correct and good deeds we keep putting off. I’m reminding myself first, because being moved by a reminder should lead to something changing in how we live. May Allah help us recognise our faults, sincerely rectify ourselves and use the time we have to prepare for the life that never ends. Ameen.

The Sicknesses of the Previous Nations Will Enter the Nation of Muhammad ﷺ Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The sicknesses of the nations before you will afflict my Ummah: arrogance, ingratitude for blessings, rivalry in accumulating worldly possessions, mutual hostility over worldly affairs, hatred and envy, until it leads to transgression and oppression.” Ṣaḥīḥ al Jāmiʿ, no. 3658.

The Humility of Shaykh Rabīʿ - And How Missed is He! Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al Madkhalī, رحمه الله, said: “I say to you: I am one of the students of knowledge. I am not a scholar, nor an eminent scholar, nor a professor. Rather, I am a student of knowledge. This manner of conduct, all praise is due to Allah, is something we learnt from our teachers, among them Shaykh Ḥammūd al Tuwayjirī, رحمه الله. I was writing about a particular issue and gathering the statements of the scholars, both those who had passed away and those who were still alive. I wanted to know his opinion, so I contacted him by telephone. I greeted him, asked about his well being and health, and then said: ‘What is your opinion regarding such and such an issue, namely, the distinction between the Victorious Group and the Saved Sect?’ He replied: ‘I do not see any distinction between them.’ I said: ‘I have written the statements of many scholars, from the early generations and others, and I have also recorded the statements of living scholars. You are one of those scholars, and I would like to record your statement on this subject alongside theirs.’ He said: ‘No, I seek refuge in Allah! By Allah, I will not accept that. I am not a scholar. I am a student of knowledge.’ This teaches us humility. Therefore, I advise myself and my brothers to adopt this tremendous characteristic: humility. I also recall that today we sat with one of the distinguished members of the Council of Senior Scholars. By Allah, we benefited from sitting with him, and among the greatest things we benefited from was this tremendous characteristic of humility. He would say, regarding a particular issue: ‘We were not aware of this matter,’ and similar statements. This was out of his humility. We left, all praise is due to Allah, wishing that our young people and many of our brothers who are students of knowledge would take on these noble characteristics from these distinguished scholars, through whom Allah has granted honour to the religion and at whose hands He has spread goodness, the truth and the Sunnah.” Ghurbat al Tawḥīd wa al Sunnah (غربة التوحيد والسنة), audio recording of Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al Madkhalī.

This is not found in Hilyah or any of the other famous books of Tarikh or collections of the statements of the salaf from what I have looked at so far. It’s likely a made up quote. Verify everything you post and don’t just post something you see online cus it says ‘Hilyah’ or ‘Siyar’ underneath it. Allah will ask you about what you spread.
One of the Salaf divorced his wife when a man said: “I've never seen a woman more beautiful than yours.” He said, “Then she is no longer lawful for me, if another man can describe her.” [Hilyat al Awliya 6/129]

The greatest trial a person faces in this worldly life is The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever guarantees me what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee him Paradise.” (Bukhārī) Imām Ibn Baṭṭāl al Mālikī raḥimahullāh said: “This ḥadīth indicates that the greatest trials a person faces in this worldly life are his tongue and his private parts. Whoever is protected from their evil has been protected from the greatest of evils.” Fatḥ al Bārī, 11/310

Everyone is different. And everyone is with those who are different like them. Mālik ibn Dīnār raḥimahullāh said: “People are like different species of birds: pigeons associate with pigeons, crows with crows, ducks with ducks, and every person gravitates towards those who resemble him.” From the Ibānah of Ibn Baṭṭah, 2/280
