Goldman Sachs just put a number on AI job losses, and it's nearly 15 million U.S. workers. Here's what you need to know. Kalshi posted "BREAKING: Goldman Sachs says AI will eliminate nearly 15 million jobs" on Oct 30. It drew about 76.7K views. The number is real, but the wording is stronger than the bank's. Goldman frames it as workers displaced during the AI transition, not jobs permanently erased. The math starts with productivity. Goldman assumes AI eventually lifts productivity by 15% in the U.S. and other developed economies. Under that case, up to 9% of workers could be pushed out of their jobs during the transition. That is about one in 11 workers, or roughly 15 million people in the U.S. Fortune reports the layoffs are likely to come over about ten years, and mostly in recessions. Goldman also says slower hiring could weigh on employment by another 3%. This is a bigger figure than the bank gave before. Earlier this year Goldman estimated that 6 to 7% of the workforce could face displacement over an extended period. It also said unemployment could rise but the effect might be temporary. The new 9% case raises that range. Goldman also says the damage is spreading beyond tech. Its words: "The labor market impact of AI appears to be broadening: across nonmanufacturing industries, higher AI adoption is now associated with weaker employment growth and higher unemployment." The unemployment data backs this up. Workers displaced from AI-exposed jobs take about a month longer to find work. They are about 10 percentage points more likely to still be unemployed a year later. And 73% land in roles with the same or higher AI exposure, versus about 55% before 2023. Reaction has split. Some point out that new work usually appears after a tech shift, and that Goldman said last August AI might not cause the widespread job losses people fear. Others say this reverses that message. Political commentators are already framing AI as a worker issue, with Democrats aligning against it.
