I wrote about the revelatory filmography of Peter Bundy, who ought to be known as one of the great American experimental filmmakers of the late 70s/early 80s
Four of his films streaming on Ultra Dogme (online for the first time ever) and others this wknd at Tone Glow Film Fest
Alex Fields on Peter Bundy and how his evolving structuralist approach trained a perceptive eye and ear on the idiosyncrasies and profundities of regional American life and landscapes:

“Best of” lists are presumably only useful or interesting if they introduce you to new things or cause you to reevaluate things you know. Which makes it strange to complain about lists not having all the things you expect to be on them, doesn’t it?
Of course accessibility is a problem but it’s a problem of capital, industry, and distribution not of a critic’s opinions. If anything it is a critic’s responsibility to draw attention to good things not being distributed well, not to ignore them in favor of more commercial art

Speaking of…for anyone reading this… if you want to write about the programs or films, lmk! Only two programs this year, ~140ish minutes of your time. Skip that YCSE rewatch and watch all of LM!
Group chat discussion about favorite films of the year made me realize I could have no shorts in my top five or even top ten for the first time since I’ve been publishing. What have I missed?
Fear of looking stupid for liking (or disliking) something is a fatal flaw for a critic, but also one that’s encouraged by a media culture where every writer has to be their own advocate on social media
Apart from its other virtues, a regular encounter with the avant garde can be a good therapy for bad ways of thinking about more conventional forms
I find most discussions of the truth status and parameters/boundaries of documentary filmmaking tedious in the same way I find most analytic philosophy tedious. Who cares! What does it *mean*?
All documentaries are fiction films and aesthetic objects and all fiction films and aesthetic objects are documentaries. So many analyses obfuscate more than they reveal
you call bullshit when you see bullshit imo, it’s not about maintaining your purity it’s about maintaining a critical standpoint
