@UwezoUganda 2024 evidence shows that home learning support in Uganda remains uneven, with 64% of #children aged 4-16 reporting that someone checks their homework. Conversely, OECD data (bar graph below🔽) illustrates what more regular and varied parental engagement can look like, pointing to the opportunity for Uganda to strengthen everyday learning support at home.

How should parents engage their children beyond the school gate? 🤔
From busy schedules, financial pressures, and ever-changing family realities, are parents doing enough to support their children during school holidays?

Without deliberate, system-wide efforts to address these gaps, they will persist and worsen. It's imperative that we take collective action to ensure that all children in East Africa acquire the competencies they need to thrive in life.

The ALiVE team Uganda, @LGFnUg and @UwezoUganda, have embarked on a 2-day training of 60 assessors to conduct the school-based pilot data collection for the development of learning progressions for the skills of Creative Thinking, Problem Solving and Cooperation. The pilot will be conducted in 6 districts; Mukono, Kampala / Wakiso, Mubende, Kabale, Oyam and Tororo and is aimed at supporting the development of learning progressions for classes; P.6. S.1 and S.3 in a total of 72 schools targeting over 5000 learners.
The development of learning progressions is focused on working with the system to coherently integrate life skills in curriculum and assessment, inform teacher practice and guide development of life skills.

Dr. William Sugut, Head Directorate of Secondary Education (Senior School Education): Our transition to Grade 10, we are more prepared than we were when we transitioned from 7-4-2-3 to 8-4-4 and the reason is that we have put a lot of emphasis on what it is that is required for us to be able to transition successfully #CitizenMondayReport

Martha Mugi, Vice Chair, National Parents Association, Nairobi County: I think we have a few challenges, especially there is a gap when it comes to how well parents are prepared. We do not have proper communication educating parents on CBE. The fact that it is a new system, we have so much to learn, both the parents and the learners and if the two are not understanding, then there is a communication breakdown #CitizenMondayReport

Dr. John Mugo, Executive Director Zizi Afrique Foundation: One of the reasons why we needed to change the system was to align the academic transition to life transitions. As Kenyans, we need to support our adolescents; we don’t do that enough. How are we organizing the senior schools because now they will be receiving not the Form ones we were used who were a little younger. We are now going to receive Grade 10 who are a little older #CitizenMondayReport

Duncan Arimi, CEO Gravity CBC Resource Centre: This is the first assessment for Grade 9 and the learners should be given an opportunity to interact with the pilot papers that have been prepared by KNEC to showcase what to expect. We have realized a lot of teachers are not taking this seriously and if they don’t prepare the learners, then the learners will get resources that don’t showcase their real ability #CitizenMondayReport
