#Vamostrabalhar

The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians allied itself with both Orbán and Vučić. It suffered yesterday: it lost half its six seats; went from 6% to 3% in Vojvodina, from 26% to 13% in North Bačka and 28% to 16% in North Banat; and topped the vote in just 1 municipality (3 last time)

The Slovak minority in Vojvodina is mostly neglected by Fico's government. The Hungarian minority has been showered with attention from Orbán's, but it means dissenters are locked out of politics, media, and economic opportunities. balkaninsight.com/2026/03/06…

In Subotica, the city which is 30% Hungarian and constitutes the hub of the Hungarian-Serbian population, the VMSZ lost half its vote (from 21% to 10%) while the Student List captured an absolute majority (52%). poliwave.com/rs/live/parliam…

Funny thing is that none of these options are counterintuitive, I can easily imagine all 4 reactions...

Imagine. Vučić out and maybe, probably, it looks like.. Lula survives? As a Serbian woman told The Guardian: “This feels like New Year’s Eve to me, like three New Year’s Eves all at once, really.”

A 51% to 39% win for the Student List, I heard on the news just now. I'm a little stunned. Hadn't expected Vučić to go down this badly! An almost Orbán-sized defeat for an Orbán-like, arguably even worse leader. Good news is still possible in 2026!
Vučić just said live on TV that his SNS lost and the Student List won. It’s over.

Putin: "Since time immemorial, the people living in the south-west of what has historically been Russian land have called themselves Russians.. modern Ukraine was entirely created by [the Bolsheviks].. by separating, severing what is historically Russian land" Zelensky:

“You are told we hate Russian culture. How can one hate a culture? … Neighbors always enrich each other culturally, however, that doesn’t make them a single whole, it doesn’t dissolve us into you. We are different, but that is not a reason to be enemies. …

Putin "just proved that his aggression toward Ukraine was never really about NATO.. [His] speech showed that he has concocted his own view of history and world affairs. In his view, Ukraine’s independence is an anomaly – it’s a state that should not exist" theconversation.com/putins-a…

Putin's motivations for this war were and remain driven by irredentism, and no change in NATO policy would have changed that xitter.cf/wartranslated/status/2…

It's also such a Twitter-poisoned world view. You have to be truly, pathologically, chronically online to think it's "fashionable, high-status opinions" rather than wealth, power and the connections that come with them that make you part of "Britain's social elite"
I am deeply fascinated by the modern right's insistence that "the elite" is a category that does not actually include the ultra wealthy who dominate society and dictate many of its laws, and is instead made up of socialist teachers, anti-genocide protestors, and "woke" baristas.

"The Economist has assembled data on millennials’ incomes for 32 rich countries. In just three—Italy, Greece and Japan—are millennials worse off, in terms of inflation-adjusted income, than previous generations at the same age."
"Millennials in the remaining 29 countries in our sample have higher real incomes than past generations. In some, including Australia, Britain and France, intergenerational progress has admittedly slowed...An American millennial is just as likely to be a manager as a Gen-Xer was at the same age." economist.com/finance-and-ec…

A good reason to still not get your hopes up about polls showing Dem leads in red states. (Though one could quibble about whether winning by eg 51 to 49 really counts as a "firm lead")
Replying to @OwenWntr
That could be bad news for Dems in a year when the Senate is decided by red states. If polling errors follow the average historic trend, Democrats' leads in Texas and Alaska could be wiped out while Iowa and Kansas move firmly into the Republican column economist.com/graphic-detail…
