Huawei Built a European Palace for 35,000 Researchers, Then Spent $28 Billion on R&D in a Single Year
I walked into what looked like a European palace.
Marble floors. Crystal chandeliers. Gilded railings. Classical statues. Vaulted ceilings that belong in a ministry building in Vienna or Paris.
Then the giant screen lit up with the Huawei logo.
This is not a government building.
This is Huawei’s Shanghai research campus.
A self-contained research city with lakes, landscaped grounds, modern laboratory blocks, elevated walkways, and its own internal light-rail system. Designed for 35,000 researchers. Current density is already extreme: roughly 80% hold a master’s degree or higher. About 10% are PhDs. Throw a stone and you hit advanced technical talent.
In 2025, Huawei generated CNY 880.9 billion in revenue.
It spent CNY 192.3 billion on R&D, 21.8% of total revenue, roughly US$27.9 billion.
That single-year R&D outlay exceeds the entire GDP of multiple countries with larger populations.
Total employees: ~213,000.
R&D headcount: 114,000 (53.7% of the workforce).
Most companies and most nations still treat research as a residual. Huawei treats it as the core operating expense.
The result is not just beautiful architecture. It is sustained technological capacity under pressure.
This is the case study that matters.
Resource allocation at this intensity, sustained for more than a decade, produces outcomes that incremental budgets and short-term political cycles cannot match.
Have you visited a corporate campus that genuinely changed how you think about what’s possible?

I don’t think people realize what Elon Musk is actually doing.
He’s not playing the game better than everyone else. He’s rewriting the rules of the game.
Every billionaire before him was offered the same deal: money for aura, silence for respectability. They all took it. He walked out.
I made a 4-minute video on the machine he’s fighting. Watch it before it gets buried.

Tesla has officially confirmed today that the Tesla board of directors has “formed a special committee to explore deepening Tesla’s relationship with @SpaceX, which could be through certain arrangements including without limitation a business combination.”
This is via Tesla’s new 10-Q filing with the SEC.
The biggest industrial irony in one photo.
Left: Oliver Blume, CEO of VW.
Right: Wan Gang, the man China calls the "Father of EVs."
In the 90s, Wan spent 11 years as an engineer at Audi. In 2000, he went back to Beijing and told the State Council: "We will never catch Germany on ICE. So let's change the game.”
He became Minister of Science and Technology and architected China's entire EV push.
Result in Q3 2025:
VW China sales: -38.5% to 405k
cars
The biggest drop since Covid.

Apple’s iPhone story in India is a plus and a minus.
FY26 production: $26 billion
Exports: $21.5 billion
Component imports: $22.3 billion
Electronics PLI incentives: ₹19,090 crore
Jobs generated: 1.67 lakh
The plus: jobs, exports, technology transfer and global supply-chain integration.
The minus: heavy subsidies, imported components and limited domestic value addition.
It will really make sense now to move from assembling iPhones to designing, engineering and inventing the technology inside them.

US venture money is more concentrated today than at any point since 2010
Dan Gray mapped how we got here:
1️⃣ Late ZIRP: Concentration climbs until WeWork's failed IPO.
2️⃣ 2019 to 2022: Investors flee to Seed and concentration drops.
3️⃣ 2022: Smaller LPs hit a liquidity crunch the big ones barely feel.
4️⃣ 2023 to 2026: LP capital piles into megafunds, setting all-time highs year after year.
If you're raising outside the hottest narratives, the smaller funds still writing conviction checks are your best bet.

Perspective changes everything.
The same life can feel miserable or beautiful depending on what you choose to focus on.
Stop comparing your life to others. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday.
Sometimes, happiness isn’t about having more, it’s about seeing what you already have differently.
Change your perspective. Change your life. 💡

China's gov't has been buying $2.5b/day in equity ETFs since July to try and prop up market after AI slump. What's wild is China typically only sees about $218m/day in ETF flows = the govt is 10x the average. It would be like if the US Treasury bought $100b/day in ETFs here. Great note on the 'natty team' today from @RebeccaSin_SK @JackiWang17 on BI ETF.

Mercedes sold its Tesla stake for $780 million. that same 4 percent is worth about $56 billion today.
in the clip below Musk explains how Mercedes ended up there. the US government gave Tesla almost $500 million, and he is asked directly whether that loan saved the company. he says no.
what saved it was a $50 million check from Daimler in May 2009. all of Tesla was worth $550 million then.
"they were the only ones. there was no other company, no other entity of any kind from which we could get investments."
Tesla repaid the government's $500 million with interest and a prepayment penalty, ten years early. he sent a thank you note with it.
"i don't like having a lot of debt. the taxpayers supported Tesla, we ought to repay them as soon as we can."
Mercedes turned $50 million into $780 million and walked away in 2014.
so was that a great investment - or the most expensive mistake in car industry history?

In January 2025 my mom’s lung cancer spread to her brain. The drug with the best chance of helping her was approved in China but not here.
A doctor told me, almost as an aside, that if she were Chinese she could buy it at a pharmacy.
So I flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes in my luggage. That was 19 months ago. My mom is still here, still working, and in her words has had an amazing three years.
The drug was approved in China in 2023. The FDA approved it in July 2025. It still is not for sale here. I know of at least 30 Americans who have made the same trip.
I have been scared to tell this story because I worried it could cost my mom access to the medicine keeping her alive. But the problem matters more than my silence. These drugs need to be developed and available here, and that means FDA reform.
Art Allen at KFF Health News told our story this week. It also ran in The Washington Post.

What if you invested $1,000 in US tech vs Chinese tech 10 years ago?
Google vs Tencent. Amazon vs Alibaba.
Same starting capital, very different outcomes.
The lesson: A great business doesn’t always translate into great stock returns. Valuation, competition, regulation and investor sentiment all matter.
Don’t just ask which company is bigger, ask which stock rewards its shareholders more.
“If your only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it.” – John D. Rockefeller Sr.
This quote hits deep.
Because behind every great success story, wealth was never the goal, it was the result.
People who create real impact don’t wake up chasing money.
They wake up chasing purpose, excellence, and value.
Money just follows those who consistently bring value to others.
If you focus on solving real problems, helping people grow, or making something better, the rewards will come naturally.

🇺🇸 THE WORLD'S BIGGEST PROFESSIONAL INVESTORS JUST DITCHED TECH STOCKS FASTER THAN AT ANY TIME IN AT LEAST A DECADE.
Hedge funds, the big-money players who move markets, cut their tech holdings at a record pace in the week through October 15, Goldman Sachs data going back to 2016 shows.
Chipmakers took the biggest hit.
That should get everyone’s attention, because tech makes up roughly 39% of the S&P 500.
If you own an index fund or have a retirement account, you’re heavily invested in tech whether you realize it or not.
But even after all that selling, hedge funds still hold more tech than they have 90% of the time over the past 5 years.
Record selling, and they’re still sitting on a mountain of tech. Imagine what happens if they actually get scared.

BREAKING: 🇺🇸 Elon Musk's SpaceX and Tesla's potential $3.6 Trillion merger could create the world's 5th-largest company.
SpaceX is valued at $2.15 Trillion and Tesla at $1.5 Trillion, putting their combined valuation above Amazon.
Elon Musk owns about 20% of Tesla and 48% of SpaceX, but his special voting shares give him control over roughly 82% of SpaceX’s votes.
After the merger, Elon Musk would own approximately 37% of the combined company and could control around 57% of its voting power, per Reuters.
The combined companies would generate $153 Billion in annual revenue and employ 155,000+ people across rockets, Starlink, AI, social media, robots and electric vehicles.
If completed, this will be the largest mergers in history.
SpaceX shares surged +12% and Tesla gained +3.5%, adding $284 Billion in market value following the news.
