For The Guardian, I wrote about a series of sexual assault cases that have shocked both Germany and China. Eight men, all but one of them Chinese nationals living in Germany, ran a Telegram group that functioned like a drug-rape academy.

I spent most of March in China. This time I took myself off the typical Tier-1 city route and lived in a village in Anhui. Over the course of the week, I met local retirees, business owners, historians (a remarkable handful of people fascinated by their own history). I got a sense of what successful rural revitalisation, something that Xi Jinping has been banging on about since 2017, could look like.
Bishan 碧山 is in a county called Yixian 黟县 in Anhui province, in the foothills of the Yellow Mountain. It's a village of 3,000 or so people transformed from the early 2000s, when - like other Chinese villages - it was only inhabited by the very old and the very young.

This is an outstanding, well-sourced first draft of history. Timing impeccable
I've been working on this for ages in various countries: the story of the intelligence buildup to Putin's 2022 invasion. How did the US and Britain find out so much, and why were Europe and Ukraine sceptical.
It's a long one:

I was the Washington Post's China bureau chief until last year. So much our coverage depended on our local researchers. Some left China so that they could do their work more safely. Now their future is uncertain. Please help support them. gofund.me/2b1c6bb48

Christian is a brilliant analyst and thinker about China, with phenomenal Chinese. I learned so much from him while having the honour of being his editor.
This puzzling world needs his insights more than ever.

My job was also eliminated. It’s been a thrilling challenge to cover seismic changes in China for WaPo. As access shrinks, I believe it has become ever more vital for the world to understand what is happening there. To my amazing colleagues, especially our researchers, 千恩万谢

The @Equatormag published an exclusive excerpt of my book, "The Wall Dancers": it's at once the story of a Chinese rapper, a lover letter to the free-wheeling city of Chengdu & a reflection of how China's internet made - and then unmade - Chinese hip-hop.

It was a privilege to be a Post correspondent, roaming the world the last 7+ years for a paper I very much believed in. I'm gone along with the rest of the ME team and majority of teammates from Delhi to Beijing to Kyiv & Latam. Sad day, but it was a lot of fun and we raised hell

I've been laid off from the Post today, along with too many of my incredible colleagues, after eight incredible years, most of them in Hong Kong and covering China's expansion, a story that will define our generation.

I was laid off as Asia editor of the Washington Post today. It was an absolute privilege to work with people who are not only incredible journalists but also wonderful humans. My heart breaks for everyone who lost their job today - and for the readers who will be the worse for it
So many great journalists laid off from The Washington Post - competitors should hire them asap
