My partner died this afternoon, just now.
She was responsible for improving, and saving, millions of lives because she was an absolute fucking pest. She made government better because she cared.
I am alone and do not know what to think.

The baseball/cricket debate is so annoying every time it comes up.
As someone who has played both & actually played with a pro cricketer who tired to transition & play with the New York Mets…baseball is infinitely harder. It isn’t close.

Geoffrey Hinton once noticed that the tellers at his bank kept changing. When he asked one of them why, the teller didn't know, only that they got moved around a lot.
Hinton guessed the reason... if staff never work with the same people for long, it's much harder for a few of them to team up and cheat the bank.
That thought became one of the most useful tricks in deep learning. While a neural network trains, you randomly switch off about half its neurons at every step. No neuron can lean on a particular partner, so each one has to learn something useful on its own. The trick is called dropout, and it helped AlexNet win the 2012 ImageNet contest, which set off the modern AI boom. It's still built into many of today's networks.

McGill’s law school receives roughly 1,500 applications for just 180 spots.
It gave one of those spots to a convicted murderer in his mid-60s, who will never pass the good character requirements to practice, and who violated his parole multiple times.

In today's exam, answer whether a baby crying counts as an oral communication for purposes of the Wiretap Act.
When the government queries a massive database for a small amount of responsive data, what exactly is "searched," constitutionally speaking? The whole digital haystack? Just the needle? Courts are divided.

I have a completely unscientific theory about Michelin restaurants:
1 star: Fantastic. Great food, serious cooking, no nonsense.
2 stars: Often unbearable. Haute cuisine at its most self-conscious. 14 courses, tweezers, foam, and an elaborate philosophical explanation of a carrot.
3 stars: Somehow fantastic again. The absurdity becomes so extreme, the execution so extraordinary, that it transcends pretension and becomes art.
The Michelin paradox: 1 is great, 2 is terrible, 3 is sublime.
