Critical commentary about "tech bros" and "mediocre white men" has been circulating the news and mediasphere lately. This inspired me to write another (a third) essay in my years-long rumination on "diversity" in the startup and broader tech world. siliconhillslawyer.com/2024/…

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: A robot is now harvesting iceberg lettuce at speeds comparable to human crews. @SamiRobotics has demonstrated what it says is one of the world's first autonomous iceberg lettuce harvests at @reservoirfarms. The startup is building a multifunctional robotic platform designed to automate multiple agricultural operations, starting with harvesting crops such as broccoli, romaine lettuce, artichokes, and cauliflower, with plans to expand into weeding, thinning, fertilizing, and pest control.

Europeans keep saying "you're assuming business deals can prevent Russian imperialism. It didn't work for us." America: "You're assuming we sit in the same place w/r/t Russian "imperialism." If it spooks you so much, make some offers. We aren't family."
New: The US and Russia are discussing bringing American oil majors back to Russia, reviving energy exports to Europe via the Druzhba pipeline and a host of other business deals as Washington seeks to entice Putin to end the war in Ukraine. as.ft.com/r/2349d7fb-66a0-43…

Yes, we can be in NATO, and also have *some* alignment with the other side, leveraging the fear they generate for our interests. Kind of how you refuse (for now) to align with America on China, which funds Russia, which spooks you. Geopolitical chess. We're not family.

The story of history, of capitalism and technology, of politics, is that there really are no "good guys." Even "the people" (democracy) vote in horrible stupid destructive things. What you want is an adversarial equilibrium that is acceptable and flexible.

Indeed, much of Euro pathology is a delusion that "the people" always know what's good for them, and that businesses and entrepreneurs are generally selfish a-holes who must accept what "the people" want. In America, everyone - EVERYONE - gives input. No "good guy" naivete.

Good parenting in a single GIF. Connect your self to the durable and eternal. But ensure it's win-win. You're not a martyr. And *definitely* don't make your family and community martyrs.

It’s a very good movie but if your takeaway is that Elizabeth Holmes might be a neurodivergent victim I think you have forcibly disconnected yourself from reality. More specifically, she *obviously* gets The Who’s on First joke—and is profoundly motivated to pretend she doesn’t.

I grew up poor, and wouldn't call myself unsympathetic to them, but clear-eyed sober. They need help. But tough love that gives discipline, delayed gratification, stability, acknowledges their limitations. Not pandering pretending money + feel-good stories solves everything.
We tend to assume that people who are born poor and get rich will be more sympathetic to the plight of the poor than those who are born rich and stay rich. But it’s the other way around: Those who start out poor are less sympathetic. stevestewartwilliams.com/p/e…

A model for "middle class" talent pluralism away from desk work. Take industries once dominated by superstar effects, and find creative ways for normies to earn a dignified living in them. Everything doesn't have to be multi-millionaire or poverty.

Both men and women have their “failure modes” of pretending that never committing, never settling, always disloyally trying to upgrade, distrustfully optimizing for yourself, doesn’t have huge downstream negative repercussions as you age most of the time.

Modern "decoupling" of the traditional marriage bundle is behind low fertility, lower marriage rates, loneliness. And this has a feedback loop with gender warfare. Stop raising your kids to think the genders are in a war over territory. It's toxic. xitter.cf/ancerj/status/21139997…
Core “trade” - if you’ll accept me being unromantically direct - that underwrote traditional marriage and therefore family-building was sex/children <> income. Modernity is pushing people to forego kids, detach sex from commitment, and earn their own money. Trade is unraveling.

Differences attract. Similars compete. Go too far with trying to make boys into soft low-T empaths, and girls into competitive child-hating girl-bosses, eliminates the differences that drive romance, coupling, family-building in the first place. It's a bad idea.
