The Trump administration is testing a new immigration policy that could require some Dominicans applying to move permanently to the United States to put down a financial bond of up to $250,000. The bond works like a security deposit. It is meant to make sure immigrants follow U.S. immigration rules and do not become financially dependent on government assistance. Not every Dominican applying for a visa will have to pay. U.S. immigration officials will decide which applicants must provide the money and how much they must pay. The Dominican Republic was selected as one of the first places to test the policy because the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo handles a large number of visa applications. The money will be returned if applicants follow the rules and meet the conditions of the bond. This policy does not mean all Dominicans must pay $250,000 to enter the United States. It also should not be confused with tourist visa requirements. The program has raised questions about whether other countries could have similar requirements in the future.
