Yes and it all starts with supporting tech entrepreneurship more. And I do not mean funding only. I mean the general appreciation of what it takes to build it, bring it to market and sustain it. If governments are keeping the lead here we’ll never get there. How can a civil servant understand the intricacies of sustaining a business.
Yes let’s create a supercluster by all means, but what happens when demand is missing because we forgot to support the tech industry?
This is an insanely important report about how completely, utterly and totally unprepared Europe is for the arrival of transformative AI.
A single data centre in Malaysia will soon have a third of the AI computing power of *all* of Europe combined. Two data centres in the US will have more than our entire continent.
And that's just page one...
More than 60 of Europe's top minds (including two Nobel laureates) have just published "A Transformative AI Strategy for Europe", an independent report about how dire the situation is. As the world gets darker, we risk being squeezed and trampled by the US and China. On the current path, the report warns, even Europe's richest economies could slide toward middle-income status in a world run from Silicon Valley and Beijing.
Here's where we are right now:
→ The EU hosts just 5% of the world's AI compute. The US: 75%.
→ Not one of the ten most valuable AI companies in the world is European.
→ And this year, Europe got locked out of the world's most powerful AI model, twice, by American export rules. The EU's own cybersecurity agency had to negotiate for weeks to get in, and still doesn't have the latest version.
For years the comfortable story was: America innovates, Europe regulates. Well, that story is dead. You can't regulate what you can't access. And you can't protect 450 million people with second-rate cyberdefence against first-rate attackers.
The good news is that we have some leverage: Europe holds the single biggest chokepoint in the global chip supply chain (ASML). And this report sketches a plan to increase our leverage massively. Here's what we need to do:
1. Build a member state alliance for supply chain security – Netherlands, Germany and France at minimum – founded before the end of 2026.
2. Recruit many more frontier AI experts inside European governments ASAP.
3. Aim for at least 15% of global AI compute on European soil by 2030, built so local communities actually benefit.
4. Make Europe the world leader in AI assurance: hardware that can prove how AI is being used.
5. Prepare for crises and emergencies, such as engineered viruses and highly advanced automated cyberattacks.
It's too late to catch up with the US and China. But it's not too late to build leverage .

The most notable news that caught my eye this morning:
Stock Image behemoth Getty Images officially filed for prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware on October 21, 2026. The filing is part of a comprehensive restructuring agreement aimed at wiping out existing common stock shares, drastically cutting its $2.1 billion debt load, and returning the photography giant to private ownership.
While their own news site focuses on the growth potential, shareholders are left with nothing.
The reasons behind their bankruptcy:
👉The rapid growth of generative AI image models has heavily squeezed Getty's core stock photography licensing revenue as businesses increasingly look to automated visuals.
👉Collapsed Shutterstock Merger: In mid-2026, Getty's proposed $3.7 billion merger with primary rival Shutterstock collapsed due to strict UK antitrust regulatory demands, which required Shutterstock to spin off its entire editorial business.
👉Crushing Legal Liabilities: Expensive investor lawsuits and SPAC warrant disputes forced Getty into paying a $110 million federal court judgment earlier this year. A second $92 million investor judgment followed, which Getty could not afford to put on hold because it lacked the capital to post a required appeal bond.
Despite the bankruptcy label, Getty Images is not shutting down. The company expects to continue its normal daily business operations throughout the restructuring process.
Because Getty Images acquired Unsplash in 2021, the bankruptcy filing naturally raises questions about the platform's future.
For everyday Unsplash users and downloaders, nothing changes. The service will continue to operate normally - for now.

Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.
