Michel Treguer: Are you a prophet?
René Girard: Absolutely not. I'm just a sort of exegete. All prophecy stops with Gospel Revelation. ...
Michel Treguer: But why did René Girard come along now? Why not in the year 1000, or in the year 1500?
René Girard: Now you're going overboard. Three quarters of what I say is in Saint Augustine.

“Whatever he may say, an author is never indifferent to the way he is received. If he's poorly received, he counts on posterity, or on the Apocalypse, for vengeance. You could interpret me this way.”

The anti-psychiatrists of the ’60s (Szasz, Laing, Goffman) are usually dismissed as a relic of that era’s idealism. But they understood something most of psychiatry’s critics today have lost sight of (1/10)

In #Norse lore Ratatoskr is a red squirrel who carries messages up & down Yggdrasil, the World Tree. He goes from the wise eagle at the top to the serpent who dwells under one of the Cosmic Ash’s 3 roots, creating lots of mischief along the way. #FairyTaleTuesday #FolkloreSunday

A Row of Trees,' (1915) depicts a road near Oranjewoud, a small village in Friesland in the Netherlands near to where Jan Mankes lived for most of his life. His favourite subjects were birds, small animals and from 1911, the beauty of the spacious Fries landscape.

Happy #JellyfishDay! The oceans are increasingly full of these gelatinous invertebrates, provoking a range of responses in humans, from disgust to awe. The biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel was most certainly in the latter camp... publicdomainreview.org/colle…

The anti-psychiatrists–Szasz, Laing, Goffman–are often dismissed as an embarrassing relic of ’60s radicalism. But as psychiatry’s biomedical era ends, their core insight is more relevant than ever: mental health problems are understandable responses to social crisis. Link below.

When the great Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős died, in 1996, he left behind about 1,000 problems. Solving one is a great honor. In May of 2023, the website erdosproblems.com began gathering the known remaining unsolved Erdős problems. Their depth and difficulty vary, deliberately. Erdős described some as “marshmallows” (“a tasty tidbit supplying a few moments of fleeting enjoyment”) and others as “acorns” (“requiring deep and subtle new insights from which a mighty oak can develop”).
In early 2026, mathematicians and math hobbyists using A.I. tools started solving some of the more marshmallowy Erdős problems. In January, GPT-5.2 Pro appeared to have solved Erdős Problem #728 largely on its own. Then more Erdős problems began to fall—including acorns. Much of the mathematical community, which was already distressed, tipped over into existential crisis.
The role that A.I. will play in research mathematics has been talked about a fair amount in the past five years, and a fearsome, unbounded amount in the past five months. Terence Tao—a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a founder, in 2025, of the Foundation for Science and AI Research—has been one of the most prominent voices in this discussion. He was for a time portrayed as almost uncritically enthusiastic about the role of A.I. in math. Recently, though, his muted optimism has given way to alarm. He has begun to speak in praise of cognitive friction and has described A.I. companies as having “managed to optimize by removing all the humanity out of the process.” Rivka Galchen talks to Tao and other mathematicians about how A.I. is transforming their field—and what is lost in the process: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/qu…

Love is one of the greatest protections against demonic influences.
To understand why, we must first understand what happens within us.
Most people do not think as independently as they imagine.
Our thoughts are constantly shaped by fear, desire, public opinion, and the environment around us.
We believe we are thinking.
Often, we are merely reacting.
Dr Steiner therefore placed enormous importance on learning to master one's own thinking.
Choose a thought deliberately.
Hold it steadily.
Follow its inner logic.
Do not allow the mind from wandering.
Why does this matter?
Because an uncontrolled mind is easily influenced.
When entering an environment filled with dishonesty, cruelty, selfishness or destructive behaviour, we can unconsciously begin adopting the thoughts, emotions and attitudes around us.
The answer is not to withdraw from the world.
The answer is to develop an inner life that does not merely reflect its surroundings.
Love turns our attention away from ourselves and toward another being.
Instead of asking what we can gain, we become genuinely interested in the other person's existence.
This transforms how we perceive reality.
When someone wrongs you, fear sees an enemy.
Pride sees an insult.
Anger sees only faults.
But love allows you to see the whole human being.
You can recognise their weaknesses without becoming consumed by hatred.
Love is a force of cognition.
It allows us to enter the reality of another being rather than viewing everything through the lens of our own desires.
This is the deeper meaning of the Christ impulse.
Not simply belief.
Transformation.
The gradual overcoming of selfishness through freely chosen love.
As Scripture says:
"Perfect love casteth out fear." - 1 John 4:18
But love must be strengthened by disciplined thinking.
Let daily meditation shape your thinking, feeling and actions.
Over time, inner order replaces inner chaos.
Consciousness replaces reactivity.
Freedom replaces compulsion.
The goal is not to become afraid of darkness.
The goal is to become so inwardly awake that darkness no longer determines who you become.
Do not focus on protecting yourself from the world.
Develop so much love, clarity, and self-mastery that you no longer become like what surrounds you.
"The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." - John 1:5
