Seven years ago a representative from Google reached out to me in an official capacity to discuss the company's energy use. I told them it would become necessary for major firms in core economies to reduce energy use in order to enable Paris-compliant decarbonisation. They assured me that their new AI tools were already helping them identify ways to improve the company's energy efficiency, so they weren't worried. They insisted this would soon yield radical efficiency improvements, and lead to energy use reduction without any change to their production activities. "Just wait, you'll see!" they told me, full of confidence. I told them that's not how it works. In growth-oriented capitalist firms, savings from efficiency improvements are generally leveraged to expand production. I predicted that even if their AI found ways to improve efficiency, Google's energy use would go up, not down. Seven years later and this is where we're at:

First 28 days of 2025 were 1.75°C above pre-industrial! Even with La Niña cooling the planet down somewhat, this will be the hottest January in history. The Global warming rate might have more than doubled! nitter.gq/LeonSimons8/status/188…
NASA data shows that the rate of global warming over the past 15 years was about 9 times as high as between 1880 and 1970! There is more and more evidence that the rate of global warming has doubled since 2010!

33/ So find, support and join them They are countercultural now, but with or without collapse our mainstream ways of doing things are on the way out, and we’ll need better ways in the new world we build

14/ There are no easy answers but two things seem obvious: 1st, we need to talk about this. Unlike permafrost methane, albedo and the drying of the rainforests, these are feedback loops we can influence, because they are the result of decisions made by people

5/ This is one example of climate change impacting people in such a way that we respond by using more fossil fuels or destroying even more nature, thus worsening climate change It’s a positive or reinforcing feedback loop - but a social one not a biophysical one

Who will be the first mainstream journalist, for the sake of their kids, to admit the media have got this terribly wrong and that the climate crisis should be the number one story in the news constantly? Feel free to tweet at them as this is life and death for all of us

There's #drought, and then there's mind-blowing levels of drought. That's what we're now witnessing across much of South America. No wonder the entire region has become a tinderbox. The new #Climate worsens in #Brazil #Argentina #Venezuela #Colombia

Scientists warned us in the 1950s. NASA warned us in 1988. Al Gore warned us in 2006. The media and government failed to express the full magnitude of what was coming. The public looked away. Now it’s here and the future is no longer what most people think it is.
Annonay, France. Rivers are already flooding & that’s before huge amounts of rainfall in the next 2 days.

Remember the outrage at @JustStop_Oil throwing soup over a protective covering of a painting in a desperate attempt to draw attention to climate breakdown? This is The National Library of Spain, flooded again. All the world’s art, galleries, artefacts, museums, treasures etc are at risk from the overheating of the planet - just like all of the people, animals, all life is. ‘The collapse of civilisation is on the horizon’ Sir David Attenborough

This guy spent 50 years studying the habits of people who lived past 100. And not a single one of them were on a diet or went to the gym. Yet these people were 10 times more likely to reach 100 than the average American. Here are the 8 surprising habits they all followed:
