Seven signals An evolving VC investment decision framework I am going to try to put down into words something I've been reflecting on for a few weeks. Maybe the act of writing it will bring some clarity, and I genuinely hope some of you will write back with some ideas on how to refine my thinking here. Recently, I've been thinking about how - if at all - my framework for evaluating venture investment decisions has evolved since Angular Ventures got started back in 2018. The tech landscape and VC ecosystem have certainly changed, so it might be time to revisit some basics here.

Excited to announce @AngularVentures Fund III! $125M for technical founders tackling the toughest markets. Also, hugely excited to welcome @hazelmulhare to lead our network building activities globally! In my experience, nothing is as impactful for a company as putting the right person in the right place at the right time. And this is Hazel's superpower. We're so happy to have her on the team.

Super excited to finally announce Angular Ventures III at $125M. We closed the fund in late 2023 (2x oversubscribed) and began deploying in 2024. As always, we remain dedicated to backing determined technical founders across Europe and Israel solving today’s most complex problems. buff.ly/4jKHicE

The five hardest-to-land pieces of advice for founders: 1. Raise less. 2. Cut deeper and faster than you think you need to. 3. Smaller teams can outperform bigger teams. 4. Never ever take venture debt. 5. (For B2B) Don't be afraid to raise your minimum price & fire customers

New blog post: No sleepwalk to success. Engineering success in a technical startup I’ve spent 20 years investing in and working with deeply technical founders at a very early stage. Looking back, there seems to be one overwhelming determinant of success for those technical teams. In my experience, success is highly correlated with how obsessive a founding team is about developing an extraordinarily efficient go-to-market (GTM) machine. At first blush, this statement may seem obvious. I even hesitated if it was worth trying to write about it — as I feared I would get accused of stating the obvious. But I’m going to attempt it. If it changes the trajectory of one company, it’s worth it. medium.com/angularventures/n…

Entire categories of startups got killed today by OpenAI at DevDay. It was total carnage for AI startup founders as @sama threw one new feature after the other at them. Here are some startup categories that won’t exist starting tomorrow: 1. Closed Source LLMs: OpenAI launched GPT-4 Turbo which has 128K context length and is 2.75x cheaper. 💀Anthropic 💀Bard 💀Cohere 2. Text to Speech APIs: OpenAI now provides a Text to Speech API with 6 human-like voices. 💀Eleven Labs 💀PlayHT 3. ‘Chat with Your X’ Apps: OpenAI now supports built in RAG. 💀Chatbase 💀ChatPDF 💀SiteGPT 💀Cody 4. Vector Databases: Devs will say goodbye to vector DBs now that RAG is supported by GPT APIs. 💀Pinecone 💀Chroma 💀Qdrant 5. AI Development Frameworks: No one will use frameworks to develop on top of LLMs, everyone will just use OpenAI since it’s so easy to build AI apps with the Assistants API now. 💀Langchain 💀LlamaIndex Is there any category I missed?

I was looking forward to participating in and speaking at WebSummit. In light of these comments that show a complete lack of moral clarity, I have no choice but to cancel my participation. I know I am joining several other people in making this decision. I unequivocally condemn the actions of terrorists in targeting civilians, and I fully support the right and obligation of the Israeli government to defend its people in accordance with international law and humanitarian principles. I expect responsible public figures such as yourself to do the same. #IStandWithIsrael #CancelWebSummit
