Psychological depth 2. Meaningful character development 3. Thematic significance - the protag must embody the story's theme 4. Narrative integration - everything about the character must drive the plot 1.Psychological Depth: Subaru's inferiority complex and trauma from Return by Death make him compelling, but Rudeus's insecurities, self-loathing, and past experiences continue to shape his behaviour and relationships throughout his entire life which has more depth than Subaru's. 2. Meaningful Character Development: Subaru learns to accept himself and stop measuring his worth by his ability to save others while Rudeus goes from a shut-in who wasted his previous life to someone who takes responsibility for his family, with his development spanning childhood to adulthood and he faces himself over and over again and he's written in a way that actually feels realistic 3. Thematic Significance: Subaru embodies self-worth and perseverance, while Rudeus embodies the idea of getting a second chance at life and learning not to waste it. Both represent their stories' themes exceptionally well buh to me rudeus carries his story better 4. Narrative Integration: Subaru's Return by Death drives Re:Zero's plot in a very wonderful where he starts from the beginning over and over again, while Rudeus's relationships, the Teleportation Incident, and his conflicts with Orsted and Hitogami perfectly interwine with his character, driving the story forward perfectly
