I'm a combat veteran who fought for this country for two decades.
Deployed seven times, five times to Iraq, once to Afghanistan, was awarded six combat awards, three for valor.
Have lost more friends downrange than I can count on both hands.
I will NOT abide a communist nor a moose limb United States of America, and I will take up arms and fight to the death to prevent both from ever happening here.
And there are many like me.
FAFO.

256Gb of RDIMM DDR5 Memory is literally $10k to $11k USD right now, so that makes sense.
This man gets it.
Should you buy a 512GB Mac Studio for Local AI? I ran the numbers before ordering one.
1) On token price alone, renting wins. At DeepSeek V4.1 Flash API rates, the Mac needs years of 24/7 output to pay for itself.
2) Price per token is the wrong way to judge it, though. In expensive housing markets, renting is cheaper month to month than owning, and people still buy for control and because a home holds value. The same logic applies to this machine.
3) It holds value. The 512GB M3 Ultra now resells for about twice what it cost new, because memory got scarce. If mine resells for even half, the real cost halves.
4) Nobody can take it away. API models get swapped, rate limited and refused mid-task. In June, access to two frontier models was cut off for almost three weeks. Weights on my desk stay put.
5) Zero-cost tokens change what you build. When every call costs nothing, agents can run all day and you can experiment freely. MacStories ran local agents 24/7 for 99 days at zero token cost.
6) It runs the big ones. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (552B) and GLM-5.3 (744B) don’t fit in 256GB. In 512GB, each loads into one memory pool.
So if you’d use it a few hours a week, rent. If you’d run it all day the moment it was free, buy.
Go Local AI!

THAT’S my wife! Nearly 40 years and she’s still the toughest person I know. JB Pritzker went after the wrong lady.
Love you, Cindy.

Mac Studio vs 4x DGX Spark
@jun_song bringing some interesting numbers to the table.
A 512GB M5 Ultra could beat 4 DGX Sparks on price, heat and power consumption.
Really keen to see how this comparison plays out when the 512GB Ultra is here. @u1tra_instinct you're up!
The Mac Studio M5 Ultra 512GB is coming out soon.
If you are trying to pick between this and a 4x DGX Spark setup, just get the Mac Studio for everyday work.
Both give you 512GB of unified RAM, but the Mac beats it easily on price, heat, and power use.
Unless you are doing heavy dev work that really needs CUDA, the Mac Studio is the better choice.

Hahaha yeah I figured as much 😂.
I literally dropped my Claude sub once I was able to run the latest DeepSeek Flash locally.

This has been on my mind every time FSD takes over 😅.
If, five years ago, any one had told me that I would be able to build significant software systems while driving in my car in a few years, I would have written them off as being overly optimistic by several orders of magnitude.
And that makes we wonder what the next five years will bring. I think we are in for a radical reshuffling of priorities that the powers that be are unprepared for. I suspect it will overtake them before they can muster a response.
