In April, Crispin Odey dropped his £79mn #libel claim against us.
This is the inside story of how Odey’s battle to reclaim his reputation backfired.
It's about the brave women who spoke out — and the new allegations the two-year legal saga unearthed.

NEW 🚨
In recent years, Guy Hands has focused on legacy. He retired from Terra Firma to focus on philanthropy, & last week ended a controversial deal with a £6bn swan song.
But former staffers described to me & @carolinebinham another side to Hands.

Several staff said Hands’ commented on the size of women’s breasts. Another said he told a story about a business associate masturbating in the bath.
They said he was volatile & unchallenged; “charming and charismatic” one moment, “harsh [and] domineering” the next.

Hands' representatives denied he had a tendency to talk about sex or books about sex.

Last night I helped judge the British Journalism awards investigative journalism category. The winner and other short-listed were excellent, but I wanted to highlight the work of @antoniacundy. It wasn't short listed but was beautifully written - do read

First up, @antoniacundy's portrait of three former Opus Dei assistant numeraries & the first women in the Western world to speak publicly about their treatment. A rich, triple portrait spanning some 30 years on.ft.com/4gkO3Qz

Huge admiration for @KirstyWark The predictable “it’s all woke” commentary has begun but as is often the case with cases such as these, it’s the older women speaking in defence of younger people which shifts the dial.
Retain older women in broadcasting.

I presented a show for the BBC on my work into the experience of assistant numeraries in Opus Dei.
This is Raquel's story. She was a member in Guatemala until 2019.
Have a listen. Huge thanks to stellar producer Rachel Briggs.

Staff at ITN have challenged execs over a report into its handling of grievances and NDA use.
"If this was a public sector organisation, we would say... I’m surprised there have been no resignations or firings," one star said.

Two years after allegations emerged over the use of NDAs to cover up discrimination, harassment and bullying, ITN has been told to review their use and improve whistleblowing processes by law firm report ft.com/content/e619067a-4aba… via @ft and w/ investigations guru @antoniacundy
🚨 Argentine prosecutors accused senior Opus Dei leaders of exploiting and trafficking women.
It's the first criminal proceeding to stem from a wave of public allegations *and* the first time OD's leadership has ever been legally implicated in them.
ft.com/content/0e17910a-8778… 1/5
Opus Dei said the accusations were a "complete decontextualisation" of "the vocation freely chosen by the assistant numeraries" and that after "three years of similar accusations made only in the media, the investigation is necessary to clarify the situation definitively." 4/5
The prosecutor's inquiry request was first reported in Argentina by @PaulaBistagnino in @eldiarioes.

🚨NEW: Dozens of former Opus Dei members have accused the group of recruiting children in recent years.
More than a dozen also said minors lined up for membership were encouraged to adopt painful corporal mortification practices.
ft.com/content/4e9aa330-44c3…
The former members said minors were "groomed" through youth clubs, programmes and schools linked to Opus Dei around the world.
They said minors were particularly targeted to be celibate members, who hold the most senior positions in Opus Dei.
Opus Dei denied the claims.
