A demonstration was held today in front of the Mullaitivu District Secretariat, urging that the #Rohingya #refugees who sought asylum in the Mullaitivu seas not be deported to their home country and calling on Sri Lanka to uphold international human rights laws. This protest was organized by the North-East Coordinating Committee.

Today marks 24 years since human rights lawyer and leading Tamil politician Kumar Ponnambalam was shot dead in the Sri Lankan capital, in broad daylight.
Ponnambalam, the former leader of the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC), was killed in Colombo by unidentified gunmen on January 5th, 2000, whilst in his car on Ramakrishna Lane, in Wellawetta. The murder came a few days after he had written an open letter to then president Chandrika Kumaratunga, condemning her anti-Tamil policies.
He was renowned for his pro bono work in defending Tamil and Sinhala youths detained under Sri Lanka's notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act and had filed reports in important human rights cases that incriminated the Chandrika government, including the gang rape and murder of Tamil student, Krishanthi Kumaraswamy and mass graves in Chemmani.
According to The Sunday Leader, Ponnambalam's killing was organised by Baddegana Sanjeewa, a member of Kumaratunga’s Presidential Security Division. The newspaper stated that she also tried to protect Ponnambalam's killers after the assassination. The murder weapon reportedly belonged to Mahendra Ratwatte, Kumaratunga's second cousin and son of a deputy defence minister Anuruddha Ratwatte
To this day no one, including Kumaratunga, has been held accountable for the murder.

The 25th Memorial of Maamanithar Kumar Ponnambalam was held today at Kalaithoothu Hall, Jaffna, with MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam inaugurating the event by garlanding his father’s portrait. The memorial lecture was attended by key figures, including Tamil National Alliance MP S. Sritharan, along with a packed hall of supporters and well-wishers. The event honored the legacy of Kumar Ponnambalam and reflected on his enduring contributions to Tamil politics and justice. A powerful tribute to a visionary leader. #kumarponnambalam

Three human remains suspected to female LTTE Members have been identified on the sixth day of the third phase of excavation at the Mullaitivu #Kokkuthoduvai mass grave. Gunshot bullets and fragments of fences used in military camps were also discovered during the excavation.
