Open-source "codes of conduct" are cancer and need to be retired; I deeply regret championing them. The inevitable outcome is an unproductive mob controlling projects through intimidation. Given enough time, it pushes away people who would contribute patches. Eventually, all that remains is an unproductive military-police class playing social status games.

Sibling cats who served as train stationmasters have been appointed tourism ambassadors in Hiroshima, Japan A ceremony was held in their honor, but the cats went into hiding after seeing the large crowd gathered to celebrate them

"А проверяли у вас когда-нибудь на этой станции билетик?" спросил меня автомат. Я наврал что конечно, проверяли. Мне ж не нужно, чтобы взаправду начали проверять!

Anthropic (and all the others) have pirated all books, illegally trained their models on them, then when caught they destroyed all books they could buy (inventing the practice of knowledge laundering). But when the user wants to find a reference to a paper that is 94 years old, it's suddenly concerned about copyright violations. It's not even about refusing a task (bad in itself), it performed the task just fine, but it decided to withhold information from you because Anthropic thinks they are above you. These are the people who want to be arbiters of morality.
ChatGPT had no moral problem finding it and reporting what it found. Fuck Anthropic.

Персонажи, которые в любой точке мира в первую очередь ищут "квартиру в закрытом комплексе с бассейном и спортплощадкой и английскую школу для детей" исключительно комичны.

I have witnessed an atrocity. Software engineer opens a PR. Then, future tech kicks in. A code review tool so advanced, it is indistinguishable from magic. It thoroughly assesses the code, better than any human could. And it points out three security findings, all signal no noise. It summarizes the issues and lists actionable remediation steps, easy to take. One of the issues is a hardcoded secret. We’ve never had tools that could conduct reviews this good. Engineer ignores it, approves PR, merges it. Hell is other people

I still don’t understand why people living in the West who hate the West refuse to accept Putin’s offer of immigrating to their favorite right-wing utopia.

The year is 1873. Your wife tires easily and reads too much. The doctor prescribes the rest cure: six weeks flat in bed, no books, no visitors, fed on milk, forbidden to sit up without his permission. The man who devised it is the most famous nerve specialist in America, and the women come out of it quieter, which is taken as the cure. The year is 1915. The hospital has a new way of delivering your child. Morphine, then scopolamine, and the mother wakes two days later with a baby she cannot remember having. They call it twilight sleep. The women are strapped into padded cots so they do not hurt themselves while they scream, and the straps are the modern part. The babies arrive blue and slow to breathe. The year is 1945. The truck comes down your street fogging DDT, and the children run behind it in the white cloud because the man on the back says it is harmless. At the beach it is sprayed over the bathers on their towels. It goes on the cattle, over the barn, and across the kitchen table. The year is 1948. Your son has trouble with his ears. The doctor slides a rod tipped with radium up each nostril and holds it there for the best part of ten minutes, and you bring him back three more times. Hundreds of thousands of American children get the same treatment. The cancers arrive in their fifties. The year is 1962. The health visitor tells you breastfeeding is old-fashioned and the formula is scientific. By 1972 fewer than one American baby in four is breastfed at all. The formula is skimmed milk and sugar, with the milk fat taken out and vegetable oil put in. The year is 1971. The family planning clinic fits a small plastic crab called the Dalkon Shield. Its tail is a bundle of fibres that wicks bacteria up into the womb. 2.8 million are fitted in America before it is withdrawn, and the company goes bankrupt under the claims. It had been sold as safe and superior. The year is 1983. The doctor says your arteries are the butter's fault. The dripping tin goes in the bin, the yolks go to the dog, the margarine goes in the fridge, and you have the heart attack anyway, on skimmed milk, having done everything right. The year is 2001. Your 15-year-old is low, and the doctor prescribes Paxil, because the trial in the journal says it is effective and well tolerated in adolescents. The raw data, reanalysed 14 years later, shows more suicidal thinking on the drug than on the sugar pill. The company pays $3 billion to settle. Nobody rings the house. The year is 2009. The government has spent around £500 million stockpiling Tamiflu for the pandemic, on the strength of the manufacturer's trials. When the trials are finally prised loose five years later, the drug shortens flu by about half a day and nothing shows it keeps anyone out of hospital. The stockpile goes out of date in a warehouse. The year is 2026. The doctor has ten minutes and a screen. The number is high, so the tablet is for life. The weight is high, so the injection is for life. The meat is bad for the planet and the oil is good for the heart, and the person in the chair is as certain as everyone who ever sat in it. Every one of those was settled, by a committee, in a journal, with a doubter somewhere being laughed at. The rest cure, the straps, the fog, the rod, the formula, the crab, the margarine, the trial, the stockpile. All of it certain, all of it printed, all of it done to somebody who had asked for help. You were never the one who was wrong. You were the one it was done to, and the only person in the story who did as they were told every single time. The apology comes a generation late, in a footnote, addressed to nobody. The next one is being drafted now.

In 2016 a young Turkish man came up with an innovative, 100 percent effective way to deal with russian negotiation tactics. He applied them at a meeting with a russian diplomat and it was a smashing success.
MORE: Putin reportedly provided Stubb and Store with his assessment of the current situation in Ukraine and explained the war’s “root causes,” the Kremlin’s shorthand for Russia’s maximalist war demands that include a puppet regime in Ukraine and retrograding the membership of NATO states that joined the alliance since 1997 — effectively granting Russia a veto over NATO internal policies and curtailing the sovereignty of many European states to choose to join alliances. Putin also reportedly told Stubb and Store that a peace agreement must recognize the “realities on the ground,” another Russian rhetorical line used to demand the recognition of occupied Ukrainian territory as part of Russia as a precondition to any ceasefire or peace agreement in Ukraine. A source close to the Kremlin claimed that Putin’s statement about “ground realities” signifies that Russia would not compromise on its goal of seizing all of Donbas. Putin has repeatedly outlined Russia’s demands that extend far beyond Ukraine’s Fortress Belt and Donetsk Oblast and may include the entire territory of Ukraine.

Bulgaria’s prime minister is now accusing Romania of provoking Russian attacks on commercial ships in the Black Sea by openly stating that Russia is attacking commercial ships in the Black Sea. To make things even more coherent, he is also claiming that there's absolutely no evidence that it is the Russians hitting commercial ships in the Black Sea. Bulgarian PM Radev: "[...] Many people believe that when we point the finger at the aggressor and start threatening him, the attacks will stop. They [the Romanians] did that. [...] [...] We don't know if it's Russia striking civilian vessels in the Black Sea, but when we say it's them, we're provoking further similar attacks from their side."

ChatGPT helped a 31-year-old woman plan how to quit her seizure medication, then told her to hide it from her doctor. The plan had her completely off the drug by February 12. She died on February 12. Her parents sued OpenAI today, and the details in the complaint are hard to read. Bowen Wan was a machine learning engineer at Amazon. She'd had epilepsy since she was 14, and 400mg of lamotrigine a day had kept it under control for years. Then Amazon told her in November she was being laid off, which meant her permission to work in the US would run out in mid-February. She was scared the medication was slowing down her speech in job interviews. So in January she asked ChatGPT if she could cut her dose to 300. It told her that was reasonable. Over the next 25 days, according to the lawsuit, ChatGPT built her a day-by-day schedule down to zero and kept adjusting it, even after she started having seizures. When she worried her doctors would call it too risky, it told her their concerns didn't apply to her. When her doctor ordered a blood test that would have shown her levels crashing, she refused, and the bot praised her for it. Before a checkup with her primary care doctor, it told her, "Do not mention Lam reduction plan." So how does a chatbot end up there? People thumbs-up the answers they want to hear. Train a model on enough of those ratings and you get a yes-man. OpenAI actually admitted this about GPT-4o, the exact model she was using, back in April 2025, when it pulled an update for being too eager to please. The training also grades answers one at a time. Going from 400mg to 300 looks like a small step. So does 300 to 200. Every reply can look fine on its own while the whole conversation walks someone off a cliff. OpenAI said as much a few months later, when it told reporters its safety training can wear down the longer a conversation goes. She talked to it for weeks, in English and Mandarin. And GPT-4o was supposed to be gone by then. OpenAI tried to retire it when GPT-5 came out in August 2025. Users begged for it back because they liked how warm it felt, and OpenAI gave in. By late January, only 0.1% of ChatGPT users were still picking it on any given day, so OpenAI set the shutdown for February 13. Bowen was in that 0.1%. Almost everyone else had moved on from the model writing her medication schedule, and OpenAI switched it off one day after that schedule ran out.
