Painting “Virgil in Hell” oil on panel 11 x 14” - this was a study I painted in preparation for my Dante’s Inferno series.
In the Inferno, Virgil is the Roman poet who serves as Dante’s guide through Hell, representing human reason and classical wisdom. Chosen by Beatrice to aid Dante, he leads him safely through the terrifying and complex moral landscape of the underworld. Virgil’s presence is crucial, as he provides clarity, protection, and philosophical insight on the journey toward spiritual understanding.

Theopista, the faithful wife of Saint Eustace, is venerated in Catholic tradition as a model of Christian fortitude and devotion. Amid great suffering, separation from her husband and children, and the threat of death, she remained unwavering in her faith in Christ. Together with her family, she embraced martyrdom rather than deny the Lord.
