#TukaramMundhe has amassed a huge fan following in #India in recent weeks, unusual for a bureaucrat.
His unprecedented crackdown in #Mumbai targets an issue that has long concerned #Indians and won him widespread public admiration. Some businesses say he should have given them time to adapt.
"Those who try to not comply, they will face what is expected from the regulator," Mundhe, said in an interview with @Reuters

"The actions of the Indian authorities during the recent student protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party, demonstrate how their tactics are designed to stifle media coverage and can be combined to suppress journalism", said Ritika Jain, India representative of Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Thank you all for checking in. I was let go within an hour and I'm okay. Greatful for all the support, message, and calls.
My friend @saurabhsherry from Reuters has been detained by the police. Why are journalists being detained left, right and centre? Is it some dry run for the full-fledged emergency?

Happy to share that our Reuters team has won @sajahq's Outstanding Business Reporting award for the second year running.
The recognition is for a series of stories from 2025, centered on India's stricter tech regulatory regime and the behind-the-scenes disputes it drew from the world's largest technology companies. Reported by me, @adityakalra and @arpanc_, and edited by David Crawshaw.
Judges' remarks:
"India vs Big Tech was our clear, unanimous winner, and a standout on every one of the SAJA criteria. It is well-researched, exclusive and important, and it appears to have more and better material than anything else published on the subject. The exclusivity was striking: the reporters broke news that had never been reported before, and did it with depth. The volume of documentation and sourcing behind the work was impressive, along with the ability to tie the coverage to the larger theme of Indian policy and politics so that the reader understands why it matters.
This was not a single scoop but a sustained investigation built on primary documents, including minutes of closed-door meetings and non-public court filings, with a diversity of sources across companies, government and civil society. It also had measurable impact, including the reversal of the smartphone-app mandate."

Explainer: Tata Sons: the rules, the rift and what happens next reut.rs/3TjXidx reut.rs/3TjXidx
At the heart of it, the Tata vs Tata fight is about shareholder rights. Proxy advisory firm IiAS called it a "mutiny" by the Tata Sons board against the controlling shareholder.
It is also a fight over whether a large investment company can choose to stay private if it has public funds. And what is the definition of public funds?
A most-likely legal resolution to both matters will be watched by many.

"Maggi, Maggi, Maggi..." Remember the TV ad from the 1980s? Aimed at newly working mothers and their children as a fast evening snack, with kids slurping bowls "after school, after play" and saying "Mummy, I'm hungry."
Here's how and why India became dependent on cheap packaged food.
With household income well below the global average, Indians are keen consumers of cheap food products like Nestlé's Maggi and Coca-Cola's Thums Up — giving big food manufacturers a huge market with little pressure to apply the standards they adopt in many other countries.
Around 6 billion meals eaten in Indian households and on street corners every year are Maggi two-minute masala noodles.
Every variant of Maggi here is made with palm oil. Many British versions use pricier sunflower oil. KitKat in India has less cocoa than in Australia.
Why? "Many recipes in India were designed decades ago for a very cost-conscious consumer, and those recipes have simply been carried forward," a former Mondelez India executive told us.
It goes back further than Maggi. Unilever brought dalda in 1937 — cheap hydrogenated oil that replaced ghee in poorer kitchens. Nestlé was selling condensed milk here from 1912.

"It has to be sugar and salt. Only then will you ask them to put a label?" said Supreme Court Justice J.B. Pardiwala, stressing the word "and". He posed pointed questions to FSSAI lawyer, asking about the regulator's two-phased approach on food warning labels
The FSSAI's lawyer, Additional Solicitor General of India, Brijender Chahar, responded that after hearing the court, it was now suggesting it could roll out the phases "in one go."

In food warning labels debate, companies mount first objections legally. The over $100 billion food and drinks industry files first legal objection to India's warning labels plan for packaged products, asking the court to have regulator FSSAI re-examine thresholds that decide what counts as high in sugar, salt and fat.
Industry argues 80% of products will be classified as high in those nutrients under the current system, hurting India's image tinyurl.com/axzfsyct
