the reason i'm so chronically online on X is that i owe my entire career to it. every job i've had has been through relationships i've made here, and as i hit 50k - a number i never thought i'd see on my profile - i can't help but feel a little emotional. you see, i started building up my profile when @wifelette and @tomdale took a chance on me many years ago - a nobody in melbourne who was still learning how to code in js - and invited me to speak at @EmberConf. i had never been to a conference at that point in my life, let alone speak at one. they found me through my tweets sharing my blogposts about learning the framework. i'm not exaggerating when i say that my life changed after doing that talk. public speaking was my greatest fear and i was visibly shaking for the first 5 minutes of my talk, but somehow i managed to remember everything i had practiced. that talk was how i got my first real job (and moved to the US) at @DockYard, thanks to @bcardarella also taking a chance on me. throughout this time i continued posting on twitter and building up my profile little by little. after you've done one talk, the next one is a little easier and so i kept doing more of it - seeing the world i had never been exposed to before. i got my job @netflix the same way, through doing a talk, and people taking a chance on me. some of you may be surprised to know that i never majored in CS and that i'm a self taught programmer. so going through a FAANG interview was inconceivable to me at that point in my life. i actually tried to back out of the interview, but they convinced me to do it anyway, and im glad that i did. i then got my job at facebook through Dan Abramov (i miss him here!!), who i met at a conference talk i did in London. we stayed in touch on twitter for a while before he reached out to me asking if i would be interested in working on the react team (uh, hell yes?! but wait, me??). massive imposter syndrome has followed me everywhere. now at @cursor_ai and @spacexai, i feel so lucky that i get to work alongside such crazy talented, driven, and ambitious people who want to build beautiful products for everyone. and i'm also still in disbelief that this many people care about what i have to say here. thank you everyone for taking a chance on me, and thanks @X for being there for me this whole time 🤍

It's me again. I come bearing great news. First of all, we have hit 20M active users for Codex some time this week. Second of all, this is cause for celebration and during the day we will credit every Codex and ChatGPT Work user with a BANKED reset that you can use at your own leisure. And we will have some other good news later too! Now, on usage limits draining faster, while we're not seeing anything abnormal, we do take it incredibly seriously and there is an ongoing investigation. I will share if we do find anything and my below post is really a clarification on a specific pattern that we did see that I wanted to call out. Go do something amazing today.
We've investigated a few messages about codex usage limits being different. That's not something we change without engaging the community and being transparent. What we did see is that when talking to affected users many were using sub2api. Converting a subscription into api traffic to then re-serve or share across many users is not something we support and this type of usage gets flagged by our fraud-prevention systems. You are completely fine if you use your subscription through Sign in With ChatGPT, either through the official clients or through one of the many OSS clients (Pi, OpenCode, ...) that support signing in with your account and using your included usage.

Old news actually from a bunch of days ago, but crossed that 15M. Enjoy a nice reset everyone. Landing in the next hour or so, go /fast.
I previously promised a reset for every 1M in additional active users for Codex, until 10M. We blew past that and have been silent since 10M. Little surprise for you tomorrow.

Started with AGENTS.md, Agent SKills, then .agents config, now Agent Plugins. If you're not tagged below, join in the standard!
Build a plugin once and use it across compatible agent clients. Introducing Agent Plugins, an open standard developed with @awsdevelopers, @cursor_ai, @github, @code, and @vercel that packages Agent Skills and supports MCP server configurations in a shared format.

It’s reassuring to see that many people share this concern, and I’m glad most understood that this was never about one component or one project. I see shadcn/ui components copied and ported all the time. Man, the whole idea of the project is: copy these components. No attribution required. I’ve welcomed many direct ports, and I’m genuinely happy to see the work reach other frameworks. That’s also why I didn’t tag the person who made this port. They did nothing wrong. I wrote the post because this was the first time I had seen something ported so quickly. The gap between a launch and a port (or a copy) has already collapsed. This isn’t about open source. This is about copying becoming automated and infinitely scalable. And it is no longer enough to say, “Just build better,” or, “They can copy your product, but they can’t copy your taste.” Anything you put out there can now be copied. Really fast. At scale. That is the shift we should be thinking about, and what it will do to the will to create.
Alright. I want you to read this. Earlier today, I released a new component. What you see is the finished result. What you don’t see are the days of planning, research, testing, designing, simplifying, throwing ideas away, and trying again before I felt it was ready. Within hours, it had been copied and ported to another framework by pointing an agent at my code. Of course, it’s open source. They were allowed to do it. And I’ve been around long enough, with multiple successful products, that I don’t care. But what if this was someone’s first product? What if they spent months building it, launched on Friday, and by Monday it had been cloned by agents, repackaged, and made free? What happens when your second product is copied? Your fifth? Your tenth? What happens when every new idea immediately becomes the next prompt? What happens when your roadmap, your changelog, and your launch announcements become someone else input prompts? What happens when models become good enough to copy bigger ideas? What happens when “just execute better” stops being the answer? What happens when “just build bigger” or “think wider” stops being enough? What happens when both ideas and execution become cheap? What happens when the creator pays the full cost of creativity but everyone else pays nothing to reproduce it? What happens to creativity when AI makes copying effectively free? What happens to the will to create when AI makes copying effectively free? Look, copying is not new. Copying at this speed, cost, and scale is. People will tell you to think bigger. But nobody starts "bigger". Every one of us here started by making something small. You keep going because, somewhere along the way, the work is rewarded. Maybe people use it. Maybe they pay for it. Maybe they simply recognize the thought, effort, and care that went into it. Copying once demanded effort. You had to study the work and understand it to copy it. That effort created appreciation for the person who made it. Not anymore. Creativity begins with small steps. If we make those first steps feel pointless, we don’t just lose small products. We lose the people who might have gone on to build the big ones. We are uniquely positioned here. We get to use and experience this life-changing technology before almost everyone else. How we use it will set the default everywhere else. That default will spread to writing, design, music, research, and every other field where someone still has to take the first creative risk. We can use AI to build great things. Or we can use it to strip every new idea for parts. We decide.

Given some of the results I'm seeing recently, it's pretty clear Codex is a good harness. But it will seem primitive in 2-3 months and we're about to go through another major evolution in how we use AI at the frontier. The next generation of models need more than your laptop.
