but behind the scenes ethereum validators using mump2p are receiving blocks 2–4x faster on average
so what is optimum actually doing and why does it matter
most blockchains still rely on traditional gossip networks to share data
the problem is that nodes often send the same data again and again which wastes bandwidth and slows everything down
optimum takes a different approach using random linear network coding or RLNC
instead of waiting for every missing packet nodes can reconstruct the original block from the coded pieces they receive
this makes data transmission faster and more efficient
and this is already happening on ethereum mainnet
since october 2026 mump2p has been bringing some important improvements
• blocks arrive earlier and more consistently
• the optimum path sees the block first around 90% of the time
• lower latency variation
• better conditions for validator attestations and mev opportunities
more than $3.4B in stake is already connected through operators including blockdaemon ether.fi everstake and stakefish
why should validators care
because in ethereum timing matters
receiving a block earlier gives validators more time to process it and participate in attestations
it can also create better opportunities around mev
optimum works alongside existing beacon nodes through a sidecar gateway
no new blockchain
no consensus changes
no complicated protocol upgrade
node operators can access the optimum console to get started
and ethereum is just the beginning
optimum is designed to be chain agnostic with plans to expand into more networks and use cases
the longer term vision also includes the memory layer and deRAM
the bigger idea is simple
make data move faster use bandwidth more efficiently and help blockchain networks perform better
