The fictional Joan, from my novel NAMASTE MART CONFIDENTIAL, published by @RunAmokCrime, was inspired Jenette Goldstein. I used to work with her son, who told me he saw a YouTube mashup when he was really young of all the times his mom got killed in movies and thought this one was her best death scene
Jenette Goldstein’s gymnastics background played a major role in making this unforgettable stunt look effortless. Her natural athleticism brought fluidity and precision to the scene, but pulling it off required careful preparation, flawless timing, and coordination from the stunt crew.
During the explosive diving-board sequence, the crew reportedly used a pressure-sensitive pad to trigger the blast the instant her feet left the board. This perfectly timed practical effect created the illusion of a seamless explosion, making the moment even more thrilling on screen.
The scene highlights how Hollywood combines real athletic ability with clever filmmaking techniques. What appears to be a simple stunt often requires extensive planning and teamwork behind the scenes. Sometimes, the most impressive movie moments aren’t just about massive explosions, but the incredible precision and skill that make them look effortless.

The best-kept secret in Nordic Noir! Acid-tongued, no-BS Stella Blómkvist is a true Scandi crime veteran, so why wasn't she translated years ago?
She's here now. Four books in the series – so far – and more to look forward to next year...

Really enjoyed this, Saima. I’d add that readers have always loved heroes from outside the police and spy worlds, from the insurance investigator in Double Indemnity to Molly Gray in The Maid. Mine is a film producer. Fellow Aspects of Crime member here, by the way.

🖤❤️🖤Good morning crime fiction lovers!🖤❤️🖤
Today is a great day to think about what your favourite crime novel of 2026 has been. Our 2026 awards are nominated by readers and we'd love to know your picks across our six categories - Best Novel, Best Indie, Best in Translation, Best Debut, Best Crime Show and Author of the Year.
Here's the nomination form: tinyurl.com/yc59k7pb
Former FBI Director @Comey James Comey’s new thriller Red Verdict may be fiction — but one of the cases that inspired it was very real.
In our new Spybrary interview, Comey explains how the FBI once used an undercover operative posing as a potential Russian recruit — complete with a tiny recorder hidden inside a notebook — to capture conversations with Russian intelligence officers.
He also talks about:
• why prosecuting espionage can be as difficult as uncovering it
• how “graymail” was used to pressure the US government in classified cases
• why he has little interest in writing rogue FBI agents
• the real people and cases that feed into his fiction
• and the spy writers he admires
Read Bruce Dravis’s full interview with James Comey at Spybrary.com.
Question for you: do you prefer spy novels grounded closely in real tradecraft and procedure — or do you want authors to take more liberties?
