"Mercedes owe him answers, not sympathy"
Article on George Russell:
Contrast in Mexico. Russell suffered another energy-deployment problem, finished sixth and left without completing his media duties.
He congratulated Antonelli first before slipping out of the circuit left to reflect on a season that had promised so much more.
Once the disappointment settles, Russell faces a bigger question: how does he stop this lost opportunity defining what comes next?
Mercedes owe him answers, not sympathy
Toto Wolff did not hide from Mercedes’ responsibility.
“This was a race for him to win,” he said. “We had the pace in the car. And we let him down on the first straight.” But the powerful admission is also only useful if Mercedes act on it.
Russell’s campaign has been punctured by retirements in Canada, Belgium and Singapore, alongside technical problems in Hungary, Malaysia and elsewhere.
A championship challenge needs momentum and all too often, Russell has been left trying to rebuild his.
The immediate priority is not a motivational speech. It is a proper technical reckoning. Why have the failures kept coming? Which problems share a cause? What must change to prevent another campaign being compromised?
Russell needs confidence that when he puts himself in a position to win, the machinery and execution will hold up. Wolff’s understanding is welcome. Reliability would be better.
Bad luck explains plenty. It cannot explain everything.
There is a trap here, however. Russell can reasonably argue that the championship standings do not capture the full story of his season.
That does not prove he would have beaten Antonelli without the setbacks.
Those are different arguments, and keeping them separate will be essential.
Mexico itself was not entirely outside Russell’s control: he also received a ten-second penalty for his collision with Isack Hadjar.
Mercedes must own their failures, but Russell still needs to examine the moments when his own execution could have been better.
Otherwise, understandable frustration risks becoming an explanation for everything.
The strongest response is not to insist that Antonelli won the championship Russell should have had. It is to make the next contest impossible to dismiss.

The fact that George isn’t speaking to the media after Mexico says a lot about where things stand right now. Especially when FIA didn’t even granted him an exemption from his media obligations.
And honestly, what could he possibly say that he hasn’t already said a hundred times this season?
Just think, George qualified on the front row, got a good initial launch and then suddenly had absolutely no speed. 3 positions lost before they even reached the first corner. Then came the penalty, another race spent trying to recover and eventually a P6 finish. His race engineer and Toto had to apologise to him, telling him it was them.
In ONE race one Mercedes driver became World Champion, while the other lost his last chance at the title and dropped from second to 4th in the championship standings and it wasn’t his fault. But it happened at race that decided everything. I don’t think people realise just how fucking brutal that is.
How many more times does he have to hear his team apologise? How many more weekends does he have to spend trying to recover from something that went wrong before he even had a proper chance to race?
George has been compared to Kimi all season long and we’ve had to listen to the media and people online constantly talking about how much better Kimi is, how he’s outperforming George, while completely ignoring everything George has been dealing with week after week.
And just imagine the pressure he’s been under. He went into this season as a favourite to win the WDC and now he’s dropped out even the top 3. All while having to deal with constant comparisons to his own teammate and watching people overlook just how much he’s been struggling with things beyond his control. I barely can imagine what is really going on RIGHT NOW. He deserved so much better than this

Sorry George.
A P2 with a brilliant effort but lost all of it even before the race began. Lost boost and then lost 4 positions.
Lost balance and had no power, no rear, and Marcus kept playing with limit on brakes and to push more.
Still able to defend against the Norris was hella effort! 👏🥹
I am sorry George. I thought this would be different!. Mate. Just hats off to your efforts mate. 🩵.
