My autism work is a mix of lived experience, clinical training and academic research. Sometimes it gets really personal. Pleased to contribute to the conversation about communication by nonspeaking autistic people, with a letter accepted in Autism Research linkedin.com/posts/mary-dohe…

My son has end of school exams this week. He is dyspraxic & has a scribe. Nobody questions whether his answers are written by him. Nobody assumes his scribe is the author. And just because a scribe could technically influence his marks, no one is calling for scribes to be banned!
No, non-speaking autistics who communicate via typing are not "a fraud" onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/… the real problem, which this letter ignores, is hyping & selling & imposing "assisted" typing methods on autistics, without any regard for whether autistics are being helped or harmed

"Is autism a disorder? Is it just a difference?" 🧐 Disability. The word you are almost certainly looking for is disability. Autism is a disability.

I’ve published a preprint on Autistic Shame. It’s not an easy read. Shame is the hidden link between the stigma autistic people face & the mental health crisis in our community. This is my attempt to name it, trace it, & point toward how we can address it osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/kn…

Natural causes, they always say. But how was her communication upheld, so she could communicate pain? Did she have consistent staff, who could see changes in her? When was the last time she went to the doctor? We expect more, @CoronersVic. coronerscourt.vic.gov.au/sit…

As an autistic person who sometimes needs extra time to process what other people have said and come up with a response, I am extra grateful for the forms of communication and situations where an instantaneous response is not required or expected.

To seek a ‘cure’ for autism is to seek to eradicate a large percentage of the population who think differently, see the world differently and experience life differently. This is eugenics.

The thing that ‘causes’ autism is procreation. Not paracetamol, not vaccines, not mercury, not parenting, but basically just reproduction. Autism is highly heritable, largely influenced by genetic factors. Autistic people have always existed and will always exist.
