The most expensive part of a hospital bill may never touch the hospital at all.
A patient admitted for care has no way of knowing whether the price on a medical consumable reflects its actual cost or a markup fixed long before it ever reached the ward. That gap in information is, at its core, a public health issue.
A survey of hospital consumables in Maharashtra found an IV infusion set with a trade price of ₹11.05 carrying a printed MRP of ₹325 ; a markup of 2,841%. A syringe procured at ₹6.75 carried an MRP of ₹57.20. A catheter procured at ₹29.41 carried an MRP of ₹310.
These are not elective purchases. Patients cannot compare prices, seek alternatives, or question a number printed on a box while receiving care and the MRP itself is often fixed upstream by manufacturers and distributors, disconnected from the trade price by a wide, unexplained margin. The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it.
The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored.
A review of these findings and clear guidelines on the permissible gap between trade procurement price and declared MRP have been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA ; a step toward closing not just a pricing gap, but the information gap patients are left to bear alone.

Jabardast 😊
I did a double take when I saw this…
Jump rope may not be among the most prestigious or widely followed sports.
But it demands extraordinary fitness, agility, coordination and reflexes & perhaps says something about a country’s broader sporting culture.
Like me, I suspect many of us have grown accustomed to seeing clips of athletes from other countries, notably the West, but increasingly China too, displaying astonishing skill and dexterity.
I confess I hadn’t expected any clip on the subject to feature an Indian team.
And then I discovered that, late last month in China, our team won gold in an event at a global competition.
Displaying not just athleticism, but creativity, bringing a uniquely Indian flavour to the sport…
Bravo!

Ek doctor ki maut. A tribute to Dr. Mukhopadhyay 🙏🏽

His life inspired Ramapada Chowdhury’s novel 𝘈𝘣𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘶, which was later adapted into the classic film 𝘌𝘬 𝘋𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘬𝘪 𝘔𝘢𝘶𝘵 by Tapan Sinha.
In 2010, the Dictionary of Medical Biography by the Royal Society of Medicine listed 1,100 of the world's greatest medical breakthroughs. Only three names from Kolkata made the list: Sir Ronald Ross, Upendranath Brahmachari, and Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay.
That same year, Robert Edwards received the Nobel Prize for the development of IVF. Had he been supported rather than destroyed by his own countrymen, Dr. Mukhopadhyay might have shared that podium.
Today, 45 years later, one wonders if we have truly learned our lesson. How many more "Subhash Mukhopadhyays" are we losing to silence and ego?
On his birth anniversary, we offer our humble tribute to the man who gave life to many, but was denied the right to live. 🙏

Kudos, Nikhil Naz, for exposing the farce that was Lionel Messi's India tour.
The cost of this tour was Rs. 120 crore.
At the same time, India's national football league stands suspended because nobody is willing to shell out Rs. 35 crore.

Extremely shameful !
🚨 Shameful Incident in Sidhi, #MadhyaPradesh
A doctor who has spent his entire life serving patients in a government hospital ,saving lives, working tirelessly day and night, often without rest or resources , gets harassed by a local neta and his gang of 7–8 goons?
Absolutely unacceptable.
Is this how India treats its doctors?
Those who dedicate their lives to public service are being intimidated by political thugs while the system watches silently?
And what was his fault?
👉 Doing private practice after duty hours to sustain his livelihood?
Since when did that become a crime?
This is exactly why good doctors avoid government jobs , because instead of respect and safety, they get threats and humiliation.
It’s high time the government takes strict action against such hooligans.
Doctors are not your slaves

.@vipin_sondhi and I put forward a proposal for Bharat Talent Alliance, hinged on purposefully designed de novo framework of BHARAT-TALENT (Technically Adept Leaders with Expertise, Networks and Talent), built on dual pillars of BHARAT-STAY and BHARAT-RETURN.
This along with Bharat Talent Conclave, with a strong support from @PMOIndia and the Hon’ble PM’s presence and organization of Bharat Talent Festivals overseas — organised by an institution such as @FollowCII — to connect with global Indian professionals, will channelize talent from Bharat like never before.
With our youth bulge, democratic values, surging economic growth and massive government and private investments in sunrise sectors, India can dictate global STI order with a long-term strategy, while grappling with geopolitical undulations.
We propose convening a national dialogue led by @PMOIndia to launch Bharat Talent Alliance to retain and re-attract STEMM achievers back to India to build a solid edifice of our journey toward #ViksitBharat 2047.
Bharat’s time of reckoning has arrived.
