India is known for biryani, kebabs, parathas…
But French fries? Not quite.
Yet here we are. India quietly turning into a French fry powerhouse.
Exports have jumped 9x in just 5 years 👇
Gujarat leads the charge, producing 80% of processing potatoes.
Farmers’ incomes are up 75% since 2017 thanks to assured prices & technical help.
Result? India exported ₹1,817 crore worth of frozen fries in FY25.
Even Middle East & SE Asia are choosing India over Europe.
From importing frozen fries to exporting 20,000 tonnes in Feb ’25 alone, India is now seen as a reliable alternative to European suppliers.
The big question is- Will the French fry boom last?
Or will trade shifts change the story again?

India imports 1,000 tonnes of gold every year.
But guess how much we mine at home? Barely 1.5 tonnes. Even KGF produced only 800 tonnes in 120 years.

Expected output in year one- 750 kg.
Sounds small compared to 1,000 tonnes of imports. But vs. our 1.5 tonnes local production, it’s a 60% jump overnight.
Imports won’t drop overnight. But the precedent is big.
If India can fix gold mining with policy reforms, what’s stopping us from doing the same for cobalt, tungsten, or rhenium?
