Hard to think of a more deserving recipient of the Charlemagne Prize than Mario Draghi. He pulled the eurozone out of its destructive multi-equilibrium trap, advocated early on Ukraine needed a real pathway into the EU, and designed the key blueprint to revive the EU economy.
Congratulations, dear Mario, on receiving the Charlemagne Prize. You exemplify true European statesmanship: answering the call when it mattered most and helping Europe emerge stronger. Your “whatever it takes” commitment showed the euro is irreversible. #Karlspreis2026

@rene_richard @jcfurstenberg @MSchularick Tom Enders @nicolange_ docs.google.com/document/d/1…

🚨 KITE Insta Analysis: A 25% US tariff on EU autos would hit Europe’s automotive core hard. In our KITE simulation, 🇩🇪 Germany’s auto-sector output falls by almost €15bn in the short run and about €30bn in the long run. Losses are also sizeable in 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇸🇰 Slovakia, and 🇸🇪 Sweden. 1/4

People think of central bank independence as a natural state of affairs. It absolutely is not. In most countries, it is fairly recent. Over the course of the last 30 years, western countries have taken monetary policy, and increasingly fiscal policy too, out of the political processes. US politics is reclaiming it back. Once gone, it won't return. We expect this trend to hit a central bank near you too. Story outside off the paywall today. eurointelligence.com

There is, at least in my view, a lot of sloppy analysis about the role the dollar's reserve currency "status" plays in financing the US external deficit. I understand how reserve accumulation funds the deficit, but not how the "status" of the dollar does ... 1/ many

There are moments when foundations that seem unshakeable begin to shift, says President Christine @Lagarde at the Jacques Delors Centre in Berlin. Current changes create the opening for a “global euro moment”. But this isn’t a privilege that’ll be given to us. We have to earn it.

🚨 KITE Insta-Analys: Trump just suggested additional 50% tariff on all goods imports from EU. This one would hurt the EU: 🇩🇪 Germany real output falls –0.78%, 🇪🇺 EU27 –0.66%, 🇺🇸 US -1.51%. In EU hardest hit sector is transportation (automotive, aircraft, etc.): -5% real production. 1/n
