I got my PS2 in August 2001, right before 9/11. I spent the whole summer working for my grandparents doing random odd jobs. My grandma put it in layaway at K Mart and instead of giving me a check they would make a payment on the console every week.

The PlayStation 2 launched 26 years ago today. For $299, you got a console that played PS2 games, original PlayStation games, DVDs, and CDs. The launch lineup included SSX, Tekken Tag Tournament, and Ridge Racer V. What an incredible console to grow up with.

i love how seriously japan takes its culture. anime characters in everyday places, town mascots, themed cafes, character days, and now its government honoring the man behind mario. they treat art as something worth celebrating. it's woven into everyday life, and that's why their culture feels so alive. meanwhile, western studios can't even celebrate their own creators, let alone stop hijacking their work to shove ideology down our throats. the west really fell off after the 2000s.
