I’m long since sick of Elon’s ego project and don’t wish to add any content nor value here. I’ve scaled back my interactions on the platform as much as possible. Thread follows with other social media.

so I have mentioned before that I enjoy reading books on magic (it is more of an interest than a hobby), and sometimes I see suggestions that apply to writing because in some ways magicians and writers are trying to do the same thing: lead, control, and surprise an audience

personally, I am taking inventory of all of the ways I am currently being taken for a ride, seeing what I can do to get out of some of those snares, and treating the emergence of the chatbots like they're the goddamn fae

Real talk, friends: This is going to hit everyone. The time to prepare yourself for the changes is now. Start cultivating off-app human social links and micro-communities, and direct links to trusted sources. If your livelihood is (even hypothetically) at risk, build a Plan B.
The world’s got a lot of crises right now, and it feels a little self-serving to call something so close to home “the” one, but I’m becoming convinced that algorithmic content generation will become the defining crisis of the 2020s.

Each of these individually would be destabilizing factors in a world already socially fracturing and struggling with far more dire issues (like the climate crisis). This is the worst possible time for a new problem to take over and seize the gears which would allow us to respond.

And the thing is, AI *does* absolutely have upside. That’s why we’re seeing e.g. ChatGPT take over people’s imaginations right now. If it were an NFT-like fad, no problem. But it’s *useful*. Rapid, widespread adoption is inevitable… along with its accompanying problems.

In the late 20s, language models started getting good enough that they could generate serviceable boilerplate prose from an outline. Authors didn't go obsolete, but it didn't take much for the bottom to fall out of an already hard profession. (10/25)

Time-traveling robot: In the time of my creators, your descendants number about 33 billion. Velociraptor: <trill of exultation>! Truly we are the ultimate predators, an apex species with an eternal reign! TTR: …you may want to sit down for this next part about the tree shrews
