Incredible view from Armstrong ON showing a pyrocumulonimbus cloud and two other smoke plumes from massive fires burning west of the town. #onstorm #onfire

Fire intensity is picking up. Right now it's 101F with an RH of 20% at the Meander RAWS. This would equal a VPD of 53.95 mb which would be the highest on record for the BWCA during July since at least 1940. #mnwx #mnfire

I just submitted my formal comment on the disastrous proposal to transform essentially all U.S. federal grantmaking--affecting every sector of American science, technology, education, & health--into an overtly partisan political process. Full text here: weatherwest.com/wp-content/u…

Boots on the ground in Colorado. Over the weekend, CAL FIRE sent three strike teams to help with wildfire response efforts in Colorado. The trip took two days, with crews stopping to lend a hand on other fires along the route before reaching their final destination. Strike teams arrived in Pueblo, Colorado, last night, July 5th. By this morning, all three teams were already working the #AspenAcresFire, covering some of the most critical areas of the fire. This deployment reflects CAL FIRE's commitment to mutual aid, showing that fire response is stronger when states support one another. #CoFire #ColoradoFire #ColoradoFires2026

Loop of the #BabylonFire pyroCb. Here you can see multiple signs of severe deep convection such as overshooting tops, gravity waves rippling across the anvil and above-anvil cirrus plumes. #utwx #utfire

NOAA has extended the highest-tier "extremely critical" fire weather risk into Saturday, and shifts the maximum risk zone eastward from the Great Basin to Rocky Mountain western slope. Multiple new wildfires, most likely lightning holdovers, are currently popping up in Utah.

The USGS aftershock forecast for the widely-felt magnitude 5.6 earthquake near Willits, California, is also available on-line. The odds of an aftershock of magnitude 4.0 or larger are about 1-in-20. This forecast will also be updated as the sequence continues. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthqua…

Satellite imagery shows multiple large & fast-spreading wildfires in UT, NV, AZ, NM, & CO--including a large pyrocumulonimbus plume from #CottonwoodFire in UT. This is a concerning look heading into a 5+ day period of adverse fire weather conditions amid severe -extreme drought.

We are quickly going down the road of being sent back to the proverbial stone ages of weather forecasting in the CONUS. People take for granted how bad forecasts truly used to be & weren’t alive to remember a time in the distant past (19th and early 20th centuries) when it was very commonplace for many hundreds or thousands to die from a “surprise” event 🙃

This is horrible news for numerical weather prediction in this country. The data that comes from these key parts of our weather enterprise saves lives. DOGE moves to cancel NOAA leases on key weather buildings axios.com/2025/03/03/doge-no…
