Communities are at the heart of the HIV response.
But community-led organizations were the hardest hit by the funding cuts to HIV in 2025.

#DidYouKnow HIV treatment can help people living with HIV achieve an undetectable viral load - meaning they do not transmit HIV to their sexual partners. People with a suppressed viral load have a near-zero risk of transmitting HIV.
In 2025, 30.4 million people living with HIV globally have a suppressed viral load. The target? 38 million by 2030.
Countries must ensure everyone who needs HIV treatment can access it, helping people stay healthy and preventing new HIV infections. digitallibrary.un.org/record…

HIV science has changed dramatically. The stigma? Not so much. A new national campaign is putting people living with HIV face-to-face with mainstream influencers for the conversations we’re often too uncomfortable to have. Globally, 41 million people are living with HIV. UNAIDS latest data shows that nearly 9 million of them are not receiving treatment.
In the new Political Declaration, countries have committed to ensuring 40 million people living with HIV are on treatment by 2030.
To meet this goal, we must ensure equitable access to HIV services, diagnostics and medicine.

Treatment allows people living with HIV to live long and healthy lives.
Yet, in 2025, there were 570,000 AIDS-related deaths.
This is too high for a treatable condition.
Countries must accelerate efforts to ensure the world remains on track to end AIDS.

“We come to #Rio de Janeiro at a moment of real danger for the #HIV response... Never has donor funding fallen so far, so fast, and those most vulnerable are already paying the price. Donor countries are choosing to walk away while many high-burden countries remain shackled by debt they cannot escape. We must rethink outdated models, rebuild what has been broken, and rise to ensure the response gets the resources it needs.”

Foreign aid ≠ charity. What aid CAN be is an investment in a healthier future – but only if Canada commits to it.
HOWEVER: as we continue to see sharp rises in global need, Canada took a step back, cutting our international assistance budget 🫤

But when the US abruptly halted all HIV funding, and other donors reduced their contributions, the global response was pushed into immediate crisis.

This has been the toughest year for the global HIV response in decades. It feels like the world is looking away again.
Every minute, someone dies from AIDS-related causes. Not for lack of tools but for lack of attention and political will.
