If you look closely at the photo above, you will see a universe crammed into a few meters of canvas. You will see my parents, whose faces carry the weight of everything we have lost, yet somehow still anchor us. You will see my sisters, my nephew, and a tiny baby whose laughter is the loudest thing in this camp. You will see me and our evening guest—a stray cat who has decided our tent is his nightly sanctuary. But mostly, if you look at us, you will see that we are smiling. Living in a tent changes almost everything about your daily routine, but it cannot touch your core. It cannot silence our complete humanity. We live in a reality where suffering and laughter exist in the exact same breath. We mourn, we worry, we scramble for the basics of survival—and we burst into uncontrollable laughter. To laugh is not to forget our pain; it is the ultimate proof that we are still entirely alive. They can displace our walls, but they cannot displace our joy. This tent is a shelter from the sky, but our love for one another is the real shelter.
