Trump’s First Term Tariff Policy The Trump Administration imposed significant tariffs, particularly on Chinese goods, starting in 2018, as part of a trade war. These tariffs affected billions in imports and were a major policy focus. When President Biden took office, there was interest in whether he would maintain, modify, or remove these tariffs, given differing political approaches to trade. Biden’s Tariff Policy Biden largely kept these tariffs, he maintained tariffs on about $370 billion of Chinese imports annually. He also increased rates on specific items, such as electric vehicles (to 100%) and solar cells (to 50%), effective from September 2024. While very few tariffs were rolled back, most remained, and reviews suggested little political desire for removal.
