coding got automated first because the output checks itself. ai4s and chip design don't pay out for months, so the next leg has no price
Thoughts from my Shanghai field trip
Sentiment among Greater China investors was far worse than I expected. Unlike the US market, A shares had not seen a single rebound since July. Still holding Chinese and Hong Kong AI stocks that had crashed and Korean memory stocks that had collapsed, investors kept pressing me on when memory would bounce back.
Many investors said the AI trade was over, and a few said they doubted whether even 2027 capex, not just 2028, would go ahead as planned.
Overall, the bearish sentiment was so strong that even I, a bull before coming to China, started to waver.
It got to the point where, faced with the bear case that memory prices could start falling in the third quarter of next year, I took it seriously and couldn't refute it.
As the conversations went on, I gradually began to understand where their pessimism was coming from. In the end, they were all asking the same question.
So what comes after AI coding? What will be the next engine of ARR for Anthropic and OpenAI?
Several candidates came up. AI4S, AI chip design, and so on... But none of them clearly convinced investors.
I couldn't offer a clear answer either. Sure, there are rumors that Anthropic has made major breakthroughs in both AI4S and AI chip design, but what we actually want to know is when any of that turns into money.
With AI4S, there could be beneficiaries right away, such as companies that sell lab monkeys or diagnostic kits. In fact, there already are. But while we can trade those names in the short term, what we ultimately want to know is whether Anthropic can make money by developing drugs. That is still several years away.
As for AI chip design, the TAM itself is hard to calculate, and even if you do calculate it, it is hard to monetize. That makes it difficult for the market to believe in.
Honestly, this feels like the hardest market in history. If a company isn't making money, selling makes sense. But right now the market sells even when companies are making money, even when they beat, and even when they say demand will stay solid all the way through 2028 and 2029.
So my recommendation to investors was to buy memory, and within memory, DRAM. Not because I have conviction in the DRAM cycle, but because I see it as a relatively defensive choice within the AI trade.
Memory stocks are now trading close to 1x P/B on 2027 BPS. Historically, memory stocks have staged technical rebounds when they fell below 1x P/B.
And even if the broader market falls further from here, the three DRAM makers will keep buying back their own shares. I thought that would guarantee a certain level of buying and concluded the stocks would have downside support.
Of course, I don't know whether memory stocks can break above their previous highs. That depends on whether sentiment across the broader market recovers. But I think there is a fairly good chance that memory outperforms the rest of the AI trade.
tic tok for equities meltdown
BREAKING: Revolut moved ~2,000 engineers onto self-hosted GLM for coding and pushed Claude Code and Codex to the exception list.
Per David Abitbol, who leads AI ops there: 56 Nvidia B200s, a blended 30 cents per million tokens, roughly a tenth of what they paid Anthropic and OpenAI. Engineering lead time improved 70%.
Here's the part that matters: the gains showed up when tokens stopped being rationed. Engineers quit saving AI for the hard tickets and pointed it at everything.
Frontier models become the exception, open weights become the default. That's a pricing problem for every lab heading to IPO.
h/t @OliverMolander
Would you move your team off frontier APIs if the bill dropped 90%?
don't think i've seen a more universally popular american politican in my lifetime. both sides are lucky he's not eligible for the presidency

We found DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 beats GPT 6 Sol on our multi-step offensive cybersecurity task. Sol was tested via the Daybreak trusted access program.
We have been building a cybersecurity benchmark based on simulated corporate networks. This is a valuable indicator for the cyber-risk a model poses if in the hands of a bad actor. We plan to make the full evaluation public in the coming weeks but wanted to share our first immediate finding here.

Nearly half a year of silence. We spent it studying one problem: how far RL can scale.
MiMo-V2.6 is in the middle of its RL run right now. Three things we scaled: compute (~2B tokens per step, 1568 prompts × 16 rollouts, fully async), environments and harnesses (multi-task agentic RL, mixed across multiple harnesses in one run), and grader compute (agentic in-group credit assignment, with test-case and rubric-based rewards). We'll open-source the details piece by piece over the coming weeks.

the new wave of millionaires will be minted on RH chain, that much is clear
“if you hold a meme coin, you just get stock tokens airdropped to you”
@vladtenev said this on a podcast that dropped 3 hours ago.
he was describing what builders are already doing on robinhood chain:
• creating unique pools robinhood “didn’t even think would exist”
• connecting meme coins, core crypto assets and stock tokens
• turning tokenized stocks into a new reward layer
• building products robinhood “probably wouldn’t have thought of” themselves
that’s the part people are missing imo.
@RobinhoodCrypto isn’t just about putting stocks onchain. it’s becoming a developer playground where memes, crypto and tokenized equities can get composed into completely new products.
which coins do you know that actually fit this description?

ARE CHINESE BONDS THE NEW SAFE HAVEN?
Every part of China's yield curve is now at or near a record low.
5 year: 1.431%
10 year: 1.683%
20 year: 2.148%
30 year: 2.166%
The 10 year is sitting just above its all time low of 1.59%.
Yields usually fall this far when a country's economy is slowing and investors expect rate cuts. That is happening in China right now.
Fixed asset investment fell 6.7% in the first seven months of the year, retail sales rose 0.6%, and unemployment is at 5.2%. But foreign money came back in May.
Foreign holdings of Chinese interbank bonds rose 90 billion yuan, about $13.3 billion, in May.
That was the first net foreign inflow in more than a year.
Holdings of Chinese government bonds alone rose 61 billion yuan, the biggest jump since December 2023.
In March, with the Iran conflict escalating, Chinese debt pulled in $2.5 billion while other emerging markets lost $16.7 billion, according to the Institute of International Finance.
That has not held. Foreigners sold $3.4 billion of Chinese bonds in July, even as emerging markets overall took in $18.8 billion.
Foreign investors are not buying these bonds for the return. At 1.68%, there is barely any return to collect.
They are buying them because they want somewhere safe to park money.
And the assets they used to park it in are no longer behaving that way. The US 10 year is near 4.70% and Japan's 10 year just hit its highest level since 1996.
Reuters reported that global asset managers are now net buyers of Chinese stocks and bonds, a market many of them called uninvestable two years ago.
There is still a ceiling on this.
China's bond market is far smaller than the US Treasury market and harder to trade in and out of, and Beijing's capital controls limit how much foreign money can enter in the first place.
🚨 CHINESE 5 YEAR BOND YIELD JUST CRASHED 7% IN ONE DAY.
This is a move you rarely see in government bonds.
The yield fell to around 1.339%. It was 2.52% at the start of 2024.
Money is piling into government bonds because there is nowhere else to put it. Property is still broken and demand is weak.
Its stock market is still down 36% from the 2007 peak.
Investors are locking in 1.339% for five years because they expect things to get worse, not better.
