We don't have time to go back. Let's move on. #monad
I am a technology optimist. I believe:
1. decentralization and censorship-resistance (real versions of these properties, not larps) matter to human freedom in the coming age of AI
2. self-sovereign money, implemented by code and maintained through decentralized consensus, is the final form of money. But it needs to be truly decentralized -- cut out every possible weakness, trust assumption, keeper, etc. Of course there will be connectors to the real world - harden those maximally
3. AI will write most smart contract code. Spec-driven development with Formal Verification will be how new contracts are written rigorously. FV will also be crucial to securing all the infra including the blockchain itself
4. AI will harden our surfaces, with some unfortunate hacks in the process, but ultimately the crypto and financial industries will come out stronger
5. properly-constructed and properly-indexed data lakes will enable agents to build software far more productively
6. governments will move to restrict AI usage in the future, causing true decentralization and CR to matter in dramatic fashion
7. quantum security will be a must for any ledger where people trust their assets. And specifically, blockchains will need to deliver quantum-resistance while retaining programmability and performance. Again, no larping
8. ZK will be an important part of the puzzle too, as it'll be increasingly important to prove off-chain computation and utilize the result on chain. But again, performance and effortlessness for users will be the differentiator
9. pragmatic and composable privacy will be the missing piece for real adoption. People will use apps that stack together stablecoins, DeFi, blockchain settlement, passkey or MPC authentication, and friction-free onramps, but the part that gets fintechs over the line is knowing that user balances will remain private while still being able to tap into shared liquidity
10. blockchain will serve as the global, universal marketplace, for anyone anywhere to get the best opportunities. For that we will need guarantees of fair execution, protection from frontrunning, and a convergence of all of the best assets
At @category_xyz and the @monad Foundation, we are assembling all of these missing pieces in parallel with extreme urgency, and I hope this is clear from our actions. See you in the future

The question was: Do apps or blockchains own the user?
My take is that it's the EXPERIENCE that captivates an audience. An app has to constantly iterate to keep its users - to bring the best experience possible.
While Uber/Lyft offered a better English language uiux than a local Koren ride-hailing app, the drivers I was matched with on Tada offered a much more pleasant experience. I became a temporary user.
If the original iPhone didn't change, if Twitter never evolved from the 140 character max... other products bringing better experiences would have taken hold.
The same holds true for the blockchain stack. Build and evolve for the continued improved experiences of your users and audience.

ty to @alexlimasia for the Tada app rec... still have ptsd from some of those Seoul uber rides 😰

Instead of apps owning something, or the blockchain owning something, I think it's actually the experiences that own an audience. I'm not sure there's any such thing as true brand loyalty anywhere, or true app loyalty
In Seoul a friend recommended I try TADA. The UI is a little different and there's some Korean I navigate with context clues. Sample size n of one, but the experience is better, so I'll use it for the rest of my trip even though I usually use something else. Whether it's an app with a good experience for end users or a blockchain with one for developers, I think that's where the moat lies

We’re sharing Typewriter, a framework for app-controlled sequencing.
With Typewriter you can write your app logic in Solidity and have all boilerplate interactions between the sequencer and the smart contract handled by the library
Try it and let us know what you think!
One more step. #monad

come chat about the next version of monad - faster block times (100ms), mev resistance (encrypted mempool), censorship resistance (multiple concurrent proposers), etc
if none of that interests you, I think there will be beer

Users whose trades are meant to be protected from front-running still get sandwiched as a result of exposure along their transaction's path.
Encrypted mempools help limit that exposure significantly, but privacy also needs to reach beyond the mempool. That's what we're building toward!
🚨 New paper alert 🚨
No Place to Hide: An Analysis on Protected Order Flow Sandwich Attacks
w/ Ozan Solmaz @boez95 @ChristofTorres
Bots watch every pending trade in Ethereum's public mempool and sandwich the ones worth attacking. Hence the nickname: the dark forest. In response, Ethereum and other chains built protections, from private RPCs to mechanisms native to the chain, that shield trades from these bots. We call this protected order flow.
How well are these users actually protected? We measured it in a three-year study of sandwich attacks by persistent bots against protected order flow on Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Base, Arbitrum, and Monad. The protections on these chains range from private RPCs on Ethereum and private submission to a centralized sequencer on Base and Arbitrum, to first-come-first-served ordering in Tron's public mempool and local mempools on Solana and Monad. Local mempools were never meant as a full front-running prevention, but they do limit who sees a trade before it lands.
On four of the six chains, we observe protected order flow sandwich attacks: 28.0M attacks on Solana, 38,567 on Tron, 30,607 on Ethereum plus 2,576 more through reorged blocks, and 1,889 on Base.
We trace each chain's exposure and find that it sits in various places along a transaction’s path.
🟠 Ethereum: OFAs can expose enough information to make private trades sandwichable, especially when the same transaction reaches multiple OFAs or when searchers receive full transaction details. Reorged blocks also expose private transactions. We find transactions that were private and untouched in a block that got reorged, and then sandwiched on the canonical chain.
🟠 Solana: transactions are sent to the upcoming leaders, and early on we find that a few leaders carry far more attacks in their blocks than their share of blocks, i.e., they are likely the exposure source for these transactions. From 2025 that fades, but we see that victims concentrate around a few apps.
🟠 Tron: we presume that bots win latency races in the public mempool, so the first-come-first-served ordering in block building does not fully prevent sandwiches.
🟠 Base: we see two different kind of exposure. One lines up with a documented RPC bug that exposed pending transactions. The other has attackers preying on victims who trade on a predictable schedule, if the vicim does the same trade every couple of blocks, the attacker can front-run them without observing the pending trade.
Protected order flow sandwiches look very different from public mempool sandwiches. The attacker's transactions often land in a different block than the victim's, and unlike in the public mempool, their success is not guaranteed. These attackers simply don't act with the same certainty.
The dark forest may have shrunk, but we show there's an even darker corner of it, where users who think they're protected still get front-run. Protection has to hold at every layer, from the app to the RPC to the block producer. Encrypted mempools and TEE-based designs can help, by keeping transaction contents out of attackers' reach until inclusion. But even they might not be enough on their own without privacy, for example if the victim is too predictable.

Check out our latest cryptography paper, Batched and Weighted Threshold Encryption with Silent Setup. Building on BTX, this scheme supports many desirable properties of an encrypted mempool:
⚡ Weighted decryption (ideal for Proof-of-Stake blockchains)
⚡ Silent setup (key generation no longer requires interaction between parties)
⚡ Batch and index independence (more user friendly and fewer constraints on decryption)
We’re excited about the future of encrypted mempools!

I think this game is a good starting point for the idea of focusing on gameplay first, then bringing in Web3.

I didn’t grow up in America and I was just 8 years old on 9/11.
Every year for the last decade or so I rewatch some of the documentaries and series that are available. Every year it hits home a little harder.
Not because I lost someone that day, or even knew someone that lost someone.
The reason I go back to those stories and videos, is to witness the sheer determination, strength and compassion that was shown in the face of such adversity.
A truly defining tragedy that showed the worst of a small part of humanity, and the best of the majority.
Although I wasn’t there, and won’t ever know what it was like to witness so close, I do feel a strong mourning for those who lost their lives, and for a time in our world that was lost on that day.
The one thing that shines through all of it, is the community spirit of the American people, the true heroic nature of those who helped anyone on that day.
Be it the brave firefighters who went UP the burning buildings, most probably knowing they wouldn't survive.. or the people who carried a man all the way down that couldn't walk, or those who helped clear and assist in rescue on the ground in the aftermath, including those rescue dogs.
The world witnessed one of the most horrific things in recent history and it also witnessed the power of standing together and uniting.
It is definitely a day, I will never forget.
