Raced the @tracksmith Twilight 5000 last night at Kezar Stadium in SF, went 18:01 (5:48 per mile). That's a new over 40 running era best for me.

Legs wanted to be sore, but whenever they felt like they might tip into that, I dialed back my pace. It worked. Meanwhile Garmin with the uplifting UNPRODUCTIVE training status. 😭

Yeah, legs with a little underlying soreness. But the effort felt great. While I’m sweating fatigue, the peroneal tendon has been remarkably quiet.

RIP Steve Selvin, Cal Berkeley professor who showed you should always switch your guess in the Monty Hall problem.
The Monty Hall Problem: A probability puzzle based on a game show scenario. Given a choice among three doors (with a prize behind one), switching after one non-prize door is revealed increases your chances of winning from 1/3 to 2/3.

HR still too high, legs a little sore-fatigued. But we press on.

Per Yaseen's IG, he walks up hills on his runs. What? That's crazy for a 59 minute half marathoner. IG link in comment.
Not a bad debut 😅 Yaseen Abdalla 🇸🇩 runs 59:10 for eighth overall at the 2026 Valencia Half Marathon in his first official try at the distance. Abdalla, who lives and trains in the U.S. and represents Sudan internationally, has raced the marathon at the 2024 Olympics and 2025 World Championships but had never raced a half before, and he knocked 5+ minutes off the Sudanese national record.

Legs a bit tired from yesterday’s re-entry run. But actually felt OK.

Back in SF, finally a break in my travels. Simple 3-miler today. Legs a bit fatigued going into it but all in all felt good.

Legs are moderately fatigued. Can’t tell if that’s normal return-to-running reaction or still the deeper fatigue I’ve had. Beautiful day to run though.

After some non-running, legs tired but held it together. Still feeling the Connecticut College Invitational cross country meet (Harkness Park, CT) where I definitely put in some tempo work running around that course. Back in Chesapeake, site of too-hot training crime last month.

Flying out to New England on Friday. Catch the D3 Conn College Invitational Saturday at Harkness Park. “The walks will continue until morale improves.”

Iron test results back, and iron/ferritin is fine. So the remedy is to stop running for a little while. Legs got overly hammered in the 80+ degree humidity in Virginia, and I needed to space out the recovery more. Now I have to pay for it. 😭

A tale of two heart rates. First 3 miles were fine (117, 125, 124 bpm), then it spiked a bit last two miles (130, 132 bpm). Legs altered with background soreness. Note: got blood drawn for iron test today.

Shout out to the Chicago Marathon runners today. A bit warm but some nice times regardless. For me, legs still ain’t right. Soreness crept in on this run, HR high at 131. Probably time to get iron checked.

Legs a little tired but not bad. Could be that deep fatigue thing, could be DOMS from a couple days ago. This run felt pretty easy, not a strain. The HR of 130 surprised me.

Legs felt best they have in past couple weeks. Quads weren’t stiff and sore. Fingers crossed deloading is working.

If @RKTreats is smart, they'll capitalize on the carb-loading goodness of Rice Krispies Treats. Serious runners know: high carbs, easy to digest, tastes great. Sponsor a marathon, show up at expos, collab with athletes, partner with endurance brands.

Got a new Garmin 265S, for more accurate distance tracking. And it has the built-in music function. Loaded a Spotify playlist and cranked out this run. Good for my leg fatigue? Probably not. 😛
