Heading home 12 hours earlier than planned — if I can make it to La Guardia in time. And I’m so excited to see my wife and doggies that I feel like my car ride through midtown should be narrated by Morgan Freeman.

The 2026 midterms added up to a top-to-bottom, coast-to-coast rebuke of the GOP from the electorate. And of course, in keeping with his character, last night President Trump insisted the sweeping Republican defeat had nothing to do with him, even though he spent the fall telling anyone who would listen to vote as if he was on the ballot: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” He contended that Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott “become a RINO in the last six months” and at 11:52 p.m. was furious that Fox News Channel had former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on as a guest and contended, “Fox News bears responsibility for these losses by constantly and consistently putting on the Dumocrat opposition, and worse.” He is delusional, and that’s a really bad condition for the president of the United States to be in. This isn’t just another NBC reality show he’s hosting. He’s got real duties and real decisions to make for the next two years.

Defeat has a thousand fathers. So Trump's character, the corruption in Washington, the graft, the social media posts, the on-again off-again tariffs — everything contributed to Republican defeats. | @michaelbd nationalreview.com/corner/th…

For the last two years, the Trump Administration has been governed by a simple mantra: “We can just do things.” On Tuesday, voters replied, “So can we,” and wiped out the GOP. This was not a blue wave. This was not a blue tsunami. This was the breakup of a winning coalition. Those voters, in breaking up the coalition, treated downballot races as proxies for their contempt of Washington, D.C. The race for dog catcher became nationalized because of Republican political malpractice. In 2024, Donald Trump assembled a multiracial and multiethnic coalition of voters who bristled at the progressivism of the Democrats and the wreckage of the economy. By 2026, Trump and his White House acolytes set that coalition on fire to cater to a group of hyperonline grievance mongers who have confused Twitter with real life. Last night, the American constitutional system worked as designed and worked so well and so thoroughly that the party that lied to itself in 2020 that it had lost only because the election was stolen is now lying to itself that it lost only because of gas prices and war. Last night’s drubbing was too complete to be theft. It was gas prices.
And it was the war. But it was also calling affordability a “hoax.”
And it was also the corruption.
The incompetence.
The tariffs.
The playing nice with Russia while treating our allies worse than our enemies.
The impression of cruelty.
The overly aggressive deportations.
The accidental arrests of American citizens who were Hispanic.
The arrogance.
The ballroom.
The reflecting poll.
The golf courses.
The arch.
The Qatari 747.
The aggressive redistricting push.
The threats against enemies. It turns out a weekend Fox and Friends host might not be a reassuring beacon of competence to Americans. Gas prices and the war cannot explain a wipe out from top to bottom in Texas or Georgia or losing South Carolina or Ohio or a total coast to coast wipe out. Only the simpletons can believe that. Adam Hamilton won Finney County in Kansas, which was a Trump +35 county in 2024 and he did so with Hispanic voters. He did not do that just because of war and gas prices. And shall we talk about Mississippi? A few weeks ago, Bo French in Texas attacked University of Texas students who were American citizens of Indian descent. A portion of the President’s base cheered him on. Even some within the Administration, on public Twitter accounts tied to the Administration, echoed him. Those voters’ parents repudiated the racism in the GOP and wiped out Republicans in Texas, not because they support the Democrats, but because the party they had supported turned on them. It was political malpractice by the GOP.

Alt take: LOL. Almost no one owes him shit -- certainly no voter does -- and anyone who chooses to "owe" him loyalty should at least recognize he would never return it if his interests or ego were at stake. I'd rather take notes on who remains in the cult for sincere or cynical reasons.
Your loyalty to Trump matters ten times more now. Take notes of those who betray him tonight.

No voter really cares about Jon Husted’s posterior, other than maybe Mrs. Husted. Trump’s increasingly frequent discussion of it on the campaign wasn’t cute, or charming, or some innovative way to break through the noise. It was an indication that our octogenarian president, who never was good at holding his tongue, is getting even less inhibited as he ages, even more prone to bizarre tangents, and even less capable of staying on message. (A lot of Republicans explode in fury when the question is asked, but is Donald Trump really that different than his predecessor in his battle with old age?)

Trump and his political team have managed to do what the pre-Trump GOP never did — shrink the map of Republican states. Bush and Rove turned Texas red. Trump turned it blue. The pre-Trump GOP turned Georgia red. Trump turned it blue. But MAGA says we can't go back to winning.

NEW: "We have a lot of Republicans who either did not vote or decided to go and vote for Democrats." Florida's governor-elect Byron Donalds weighs in on the GOP's election losses, pointing to frustration over rising gas and diesel prices and Republicans' failure to advance key legislative priorities. Donalds says Congress missed opportunities to pass the SAVE America Act and codify President Trump's border security policies. "I think there's a frustration out there that we have a responsibility to address."

Ex-Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan reflects on his journey after being waived by the Blazers and now in the G League... "I think the biggest lesson for me is just being as present as possible. I keep going with this ‘presence’ because there’s a lot of things that you can’t control — in life and in basketball. Sometimes I feel like I’ve been a victim of the past where I’ve kinda held onto that, instead of acknowledging that and the just keep going. I think that’s the biggest lesson, for sure." #nba #porvida #sanantonio #gospursgo

Ken Paxton didn't even come close. With 96 percent of the vote in, he's trailing by 1.2 million votes. Paxton was every bit as abominably poor a candidate as his critics said; his nomination likely doomed the seat. Elon Musk and his Texas PAC could have bought every ad break on every channel for the entire year, and it wouldn't have altered the outcome.

"God did this. This is His victory. It's really not mine." Florida Governor-elect Byron Donalds credits his faith and family as he reflects on his election victory and the journey that brought him from Brooklyn to the governor's mansion. Donalds says he's still processing the moment, recalling a hug with his mother on election night and thanking his wife, children and team for standing by him.
